In 2022, the Queen will become the first British monarch ever to mark 70 years on the throne and celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. And yesterday, Buckingham Palace has announced further plans for the four-day weekend that will be held in the UK next June as a focal point for the milestone.

In plans that are very similar to the arrangements for the long weekend that marked the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, four days of festivities will take place a year from now from Thursday June 2 to Sunday June 5. Events include a special Trooping the Colour, a Service of Thanksgiving, a concert at Buckingham Palace, a series of street parties and picnics and a Platinum Jubilee Pageant.

The Queen reaches the milestone 70 years on the throne on February 6 2022 and Buckingham Palace said today in a statement that there will also be “year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world as communities and people come together to celebrate.” The palace added that throughout the year, royal family members will travel around the UK carrying out “a wide variety of engagements.”

A design competition is set to be launched later this month which will see people invited to submit ideas for a Jubilee emblem. The winning design will be the official symbol of the 2022 celebrations.

It will culminate with the royal family watching an RAF flyover from the Buckingham Palace balcony.
