BTS's "Butter" Lyrics Are Literally About the Boys Being So Charming, They Make People Fall in Love With Them
BTS is back and better than ever, ARMY—I literally did not think that was possible since they're already so freakin' amazing, but as we know these boys never disappoint! After dominating 2020 with their smash-hit single, "Dynamite," BTS decided to go ham in the studio and treat their fans to another song completely in English. The result? Their brand new track, "Butter," which sounds as smooth as the name suggests.
"Butter" sees our Bangtan boys doing what they do best, i.e. making infectious pop music for their fans to dance to. And speaking of dance music, the lyrics to "Butter" actually reference two of pop's biggest icons: Michael Jackson and Usher. Quite literally the song opens with Jungkook singing, "Smooth like butter / Like a criminal undercover," a nod to Michael's 1988 hit, "Smooth Criminal." You know, the song that gave us this iconic moment in music video history:
And by the time the second verse rolls around, V sings "Pull you in like no other / Don't need no Usher / To remind me you got it bad," which is inspired by Usher's 2001 hit "U Got It Bad." The song sees Usher helplessly falling in love with the girl he's had his eye on, but in BTS' case, this line flips the script and shows how their superstar status allowed them to capture a special person's affection. In "Butter," the BTS boys are basically saying they are just SO charming, SO charismatic, and SO smooth that it makes people fall in love them and wanna dance. 100 percent true, if you ask me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
