Bruce Springsteen to Donald Trump: 'Put On a Fucking Mask'
Bruce Springsteen, never one to back down from speaking his mind, has made his views on the guy sitting in the Oval Office right now pretty clear. Back in 2018, Springsteen told us he felt like President Trump "has no interest in uniting the country, really." And the next year, he said that Trump "doesn’t have a grasp of the deep meaning of what it means to be an American.”
Lately, Springsteen has been keeping himself busy with new gig, hosting “From His Home to Yours” on SiriusXM’s E Street Radio station. On his latest broadcast, he started things a little differently, scrapping his original plans for the episode—instead opening up the show with another shot at President Trump.
“I had another show prepared for broadcast this week on this strange and eventful summer, but with 100,000+ Americans dying over the last few months and the empty, shamed response from our leaders, I’ve been simply pissed off,” Springsteen said. “Those lives deserved better than just being inconvenient statistics for our President’s re-election efforts. It’s a national disgrace.”
If you haven’t noticed, President Trump—or anyone in the White House, really—hasn’t been entirely diligent in wearing a mask to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The Boss? He definitely noticed. And he let Trump know it.
“I’m going to start out by sending one to the man sitting behind the resolute desk,” he said. “With all respect, sir, show some consideration and care for your countrymen and your country. Put on a fucking mask.”
This isn't the first time Springsteen's given words to our current moment in America on the show—he’s addressed the murder of George Floyd and the coronavirus pandemic in previous episodes. Before playing Bob Dylan’s “Disease of Conceit,” Springsteen continued on a somber note, asking his listeners to pause and consider all we’ve lost since the coronavirus pandemic began—and remember those who have died because of it.
“So instead of celebrating the joys of summer today, we will be contemplating on our current circumstances with the coronavirus and the cost that it has drawn from our nation,” he said. “We will be calculating what we’ve lost, sending prayers for the deceased, and the families they’ve left behind.”
