  • Brooke Shields rocked a pair of heels for the first time since the “freak accident” in January that left her with a broken femur.

  • The 56-year-old has been in physical therapy and rehab working to heal her leg since the incident.

  • Shields appeared to be in good spirits at the American Ballet Theater’s Fall Gala where she shared the update on her broken leg.

Actress and model Brooke Shields shared a recovery update on her broken femur while attending the American Ballet Theater’s Fall Gala. The 56-year-old broke her leg earlier this year, and after a rollercoaster recovery, finally seems to be healing—stunning fans in a red dress and heels.

“This is the first time I’m really in heels and walking any length of time,” Shields told Page Six at the gala.

Shields broke her femur, the longest bone in the body located in the thigh, in January 2021 at a New York City gym after a “freak accident” where she fell off a balance board.

“I flew up in the air with such force, and I landed so heavy and so hard and with such musculature and such velocity and such weight,” she previously said in an interview about the incident with Good Morning America. “The only thing I could keep saying was that I could feel my toes because I just knew that I couldn’t move, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t paralyzed.”

Shields shared the news of the accident on Instagram in February, with a video showing her walking with crutches as she slowly began to recover from the injury. And her recovery was quite the process, too. The actress underwent two separate operations to fix the break. The first was to insert two rods, one from the top of her hip down and another across the hip socket, and a second surgery to add five more rods and a metal plate to anchor it all in place, she previously told People.

The actress even shared the X-ray of her femur and hip after reconstructive surgery to Instagram, followed by a picture of her in the operating room and another of her incision scar. Unfortunately, when she left the hospital after more than two weeks, she developed a staph infection and was hospitalized again for emergency blood transfusions, she told People. Staph infections are caused by staphylococcus bacteria, types of germs commonly found on the skin or in the nose of even healthy individuals, according to the Mayo Clinic. Luckily, Shields' was caught and treated.

But the Suddenly Susan star is in great spirits and now seems to be on the mend. “I’m very happy to be alive and with my friend,” she told Page Six while standing with fellow actress Ali Wentworth at the gala.

Throughout her recovery, Shields shared photos and videos to her Instagram practicing climbing stairs, laying in hospital beds, and performing rehabilitation exercises as she began to heal. She most recently shared an Instagram video performing multiple exercises at the gym, looking strong and determined.

“I don’t like something getting the better of me,” she told Page Six. “Especially not a silly, dumb accident. I’m definitely still in rehab. Every time I think I’m strong enough, I realize I have to go back to PT.”

Exercise has always been an important part of Shields’ routine, and she points to her regular movement as a key factor in her recovery. “I’m thankful that after this weird freak accident I was in good shape because that’s really come to my aid at this time,” Shields previously told Prevention. “I’m glad I’ve been conscientious my whole life because I’m not behind the 8-ball now.”
