  • Brooke Shields, 57, said women in her age group—particularly those between ages 40 and 65—feel “overlooked.”

  • “You’re only marketed to in your 20s or when you’re in Depends or dentures,” she said.

  • The actress and model is hoping to change that with her wellness brand, Beginning is Now.

Since Brooke Shields turned 40, she has made some of her life’s biggest accomplishments (i.e. acting in TV shows, fully recovering from a broken femur, and writing three books, to name a few). That’s why she wants other women to know the milestone birthday is not the end of an era—but the start of one. Now 57, the actress is on a mission to make her age group feel represented with her new wellness brand Beginning is Now.

“You’re only marketed to in your 20s or when you’re in Depends or dentures,” she recently told Today during the Forbes Power Women’s Summit. She added that women between the ages 40 and 65 feel “overlooked.”

She continued: “We feel not marketed to, and it’s ridiculous because we have so much to offer.”

Instead of sitting back and letting her disappearance happen, Shields is kicking the door in, having appeared topless in a denim campaign in February, 40 years after shooting her iconic Calvin Klein ad.

“It’s such an honor to be my age and be represented. I feel the magnitude of it more,” she told People at the time. “There’s a knowledge that comes with age, and this feels less like a job and more like a privilege.”

That knowledge has, of course, come with growth that can only happen over time. Shields told Today that, to be comfortable in her skin at 57, she had to “unlearn” the way she used to talk to herself.

“[I had to] unlearn making fun of myself in a way that could possibly become detrimental to me emotionally,” she said. “And it worked when I was younger, because I needed that. But that doesn’t work anymore.”

Now, she’s leaning into the truth that sex appeal and confidence comes at every age. “I believe that it’s a misconception that women can’t be sexy over a certain age,” she told Yahoo! Life last year. “The acceptance of our bodies come at a later date. I live much more in my body now than I ever did.”

She continued: “My body actually feels like it belongs to me. And I can’t say that about my youth.”

With Beginning is Now, she hopes to help other women over 40 see the light in every stage of life. The brand’s Instagram bio reads: “A growing, global community of women, of all ages, learning to live our fullest lives—on our own terms. Let’s begin.”
