Report: Broncos to keep head coach Vic Fangio despite losing seasons

The Denver Broncos haven’t had a winning season since 2016, but they’re reportedly more interested in being patient than making any big changes.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos aren’t ready to fire head coach Vic Fangio and will bring him back in 2021. Fangio, 62, is about to finish his second season as head coach for Denver. He went 7-9 in 2019 and is 5-9 though 14 games in 2020.
Why keep a 12-18 head coach?
The 2020 season was supposed to be a chance for the Broncos to take the big step forward. Then the 2020 season actually happened. Stars Von Miller and Courtland Sutton were lost to injuries in the early season. COVID-19 also wreaked havoc across the league, most famously (or infamously) when the Broncos had to play a game without a real quarterback when all four of their QBs were out of commission due to the NFL’s health and safety protocols.
According to Schefter, these issues were enough for the Broncos to keep Fangio for the 2021 season.
Fangio is getting something that the Broncos’ last two head coaches didn’t get: a third year. Gary Kubiak, who had led Denver to its third Super Bowl championship in 2015, retired after the 2016 season due to health reasons. Vance Joseph was then hired and subsequently fired after two seasons.
Fangio’s first two seasons didn’t go great, but at least general manager and president of football operations John Elway recognizes that the team needs stability at the top. Getting rid of Fangio means the Broncos would be hiring their fourth head coach in six years, and that kind of turnover lands you at the bottom of every prospective head coach’s list.
