Brock Lesnar re-signs with WWE
Mass speculation that Brock Lesnar would be leaving the WWE to resume his career in the UFC was put on hold when Lesnar surprisingly retained his WWE Universal Title against Roman Reigns in the main event of Sunday’s “WrestleMania.” It went against recent reports that Lesnar was to drop the title to Reigns and clear a path out of the company and head back to the MMA promotion where he once reigned as heavyweight champion.
Although Lesnar retaining doesn’t necessarily mean that he won’t compete in the UFC — he did so in 2016 when he fought Mark Hunt at UFC 200 while being employed by the WWE — it did, at the very least, suggest that his tenure with the WWE isn’t finished just yet.
That point was driven home when the WWE announced that Lesnar re-signed with the company and has him scheduled to compete in the WWE’s upcoming “Greatest Royal Rumble” event that will take place at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on April 27.
Lesnar is scheduled to defend his WWE Universal Title in a steel cage match against Reigns. The announcement doesn’t indicate how long Lesnar actually re-signed and could merely be a way to extend his stay beyond “WrestleMania” with the possibility of departing for the UFC afterward.
There were reports that Lesnar and Vince McMahon got into an unscripted heated verbal exchange with WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon after Lesnar’s match with Reigns, that was met with jeers from the audience. The same reports also suggest that Lesnar angrily threw the title at McMahon. If true, it didn’t seem to affect Lesnar’s standing with the company.
All of this comes after weeks of teases that Lesnar was returning to the UFC. UFC president Dana White and Lesnar’s WWE advocate, Paul Heyman, both alluded to the idea that Lesnar would be back in the UFC after “WrestleMania.”
