Sure, it’s no Met Gala—but leave it to a superhero movie premiere to inspire people to show up in costume.
Case in point: At the recent Avengers: Endgame premiere, Brie Larson (who plays Captain Marvel) was spotted accessorizing with some particularly thematic jewelry, which Marvel super-fans will recognize from the recent film.
Wearing a custom, lilac-hued Celine gown, the 29-year-old actor dressed each of her fingers in different colored rings, completing the look with a large, bejeweled cuff on her wrist.
According to the jewelry designer, Irene Neuwirth, it’s not just because wabi-sabi is trending—it’s also inspired by the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet worn by the film’s antagonist, Thanos (played by Josh Brolin). She explained with a photo of the inspiration on Instagram: “When @samanthamcmillen_stylist and @brielarson call you and commission you to make special pieces inspired by this…you JUMP on it, right?”
But Larson wasn’t the only one in costume. Scarlett Johansson (who will soon get her own Black Widow movie) also wore Avengers-inspired jewelry:
Johansson, 34, paired her gauntlet adornment with a sparkly, chain-mail-esque dress by Versace—as one does.
So…what do we think? Is superhero-chic the next big trend? Or are they just abiding by the unspoken “when in doubt, go in costume” rule. (That’s a rule, right?)
