Bridgerton Could Run for Eight—Yes, Eight—Seasons
In case you somehow missed it, the sexy period drama Bridgerton is the latest mega-hit for Netflix. In just a month the eight-episode season reached 63 million households, making it the fifth biggest debut ever for a Netflix original series. While a second season hasn’t officially been announced, there’s pretty much no doubt that the Shondaland production, based on a series of romance novels by Julia Quinn, will continue. But for how long?
Well, there are eight novels, each focusing on the love story of one of the eight Bridgerton siblings. The first, The Duke and I, is about Daphne Bridgerton, and was the basis for the first season. The second, The Viscount Who Loved Me, follows her brother, Anthony, and the bee in the first season finale hints he would be the focus for season two. In an interview with Collider, series creator Chris Van Dusen hinted that he plans to follow the book series’ sibling-centric format, saying, “This being a family of eight children and there being eight books, I would love to be able to focus and really tell stories and love stories for all the Bridgerton siblings.” Asked more specifically if this meant an eight-season run, he said, “I would love that. In success, I would love that.” Um, so would we. Make it happen, please!
Of course, season one wasn’t just about Daphne and Simon, the Duke of Hastings. We also met Eloise Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte, and Penelope Featherington, who (massive spoiler!) is also the show’s gossipy narrator and shit-stirrer, Lady Whistledown. Breakout star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope, said she’s intrigued by the idea of exploring her character in future seasons. “Because I read Book 4 first, I saw Penelope 10 years on from what she would be in Season 1, so she’s very different in that,” she told Collider. “I think human beings, we mature, we’re inherently the same, but seeing her at that level of maturity was fascinating to me, so I’d love to carry on with that…. And I think because of the books too, the protagonist change every year, would be really interesting to see.”
