A bride-to-be has come under fire online after it was revealed that she charged her bridesmaids more for their dresses in order to fund the cost of her wedding gown.

One of the seven bridesmaids took to Reddit to talk about the ordeal, explaining that the bride and maid of honour were in on the plan together.

“Several years ago, a friend of mine asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding,” she wrote. “The bride had picked out her dress already, one for the maid of honour, and one for the bridesmaids.”

“The dress itself was lovely but a bit expensive at $400 (approximately £315) each since two of us were still in college and the rest had recently graduated. I was one of the two still in college so money was tight.”

According to the bridesmaid, the maid of honour paid for the dresses on her credit card and allowed the bridal party to pay back the cost in instalments.

“I wasn’t able to go with everyone to pick up the dresses because of finals week and planned to go by myself the following weekend,” she continued. “The maid of honour said she would pay for mine on the group trip but to call her if there were any issues with the dress itself and she would handle it.”

As planned, the anonymous bridesmaid went to the store to pick up the dress but when she left the shop, the sales assistant called out: “Hey, that will be $200! (approximately £157)”

“I apologised and explained how I thought the maid of honour had paid for it the weekend before,” she wrote. “The shop owner comes running over to diffuse the situation and confirmed the dress had been paid for already.”

But when she turned to leave the store, the bridesmaid quickly realised that the dress had cost $200 not the $400 the bride had asked her to pay.

“When I confronted the maid of honour about it, she spilled the beans,” the bridesmaid revealed. “Apparently, the bride and maid of honour plotted together to charge us double to help pay for the bride’s dress.”

Without hesitation, she promptly told the other bridesmaids about the situation and four of them dropped out of the forthcoming nuptials.

Understandably, fellow Reddit users were shocked by the tale and took to the comments section to voice their opinion.

“Oh woooooooooow, that goes beyond bridezilla and straight into theft,” one wrote. “Unreal.”

Another asked, “Isn't that stealing? As in legally actionable?”

While a third commented: “That is so sh***y. Had the bride asked I'm sure she would have received more help even if for a petty reason.”

What do you make of the bride’s decision to overcharge her bridesmaids?
