A24 has shared the official trailer for Darren Aronofsky's forthcoming film, The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser.

The trailer sees Fraser in the role of a guilt-ridden, 600-pound teacher named Charlie, thanks to a Hollywood-made bodysuit constructed out of latex and digital prosthetics. Based on Samuel D. Hunter's 2012 drama play of the same moniker, Fraser's character attempts to rebuild his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter, played by Stranger Things' Sadie Sink, after he left his family to be in a relationship with his now-late gay partner.

“Do you ever get the feeling people are incapable of not caring?” Fraser says in the trailer as his health deteriorates due to his binge eating. "People are amazing." Though the trailer does not reveal a whole lot, it does provide a first glimpse at Sink's distressed portrayal of Charlie's daughter. Aside from Fraser and Sink, the movie stars Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins and Samantha Morton.

Following the project's announcement in January of last year, Hunter expressed his excitement about working with Aronofsky on the adaptation. “Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me,” he said. “This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

The Whale premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September of this year. The film is scheduled to release in the United States on December 9.
