Boy, 5, hit and killed by pick-up truck while crossing street in Alachua

A 5-year-old boy was hit and killed by a pickup truck while crossing a street in the city of Alachua Friday morning at around 7 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The boy attempted to cross the street, walking westward onto a crosswalk on Hipp Way near Northwest 133 Terrace. Traveling northbound in a 2018 Ford F-150 pick-up truck was a 30-year-old man, who drove through the walkway at approximately the same time as the boy.

The victim was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital where he died.

It’s unclear whether the driver is at fault or sustained any injuries. FHP did not release the names of either party and didn't detail whether the parents were nearby at the time of the fatal incident.

The boy is at least the fourth person to die from being struck by a vehicle in the last week around Alachua County.

Gainesville police reported that a 75-year-old woman and her dog were killed Thursday evening also while crossing the street.
