A bomb squad team was called in to remove a suspicious item from a plane after it arrived at the St. George Regional Airport on Monday.

Crew members called about the item shortly before noon after landing SkyWest flight 3027 from Phoenix, according to SkyWest Airlines.

The item turned out to be harmless, but a specialty response team spent about two hours checking the item and the plane "out of an abundance of caution," said David Cordero, communications and marketing director for the City of St. George.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was the lead investigator for the incident, although multiple agencies responded, including the St. George fire and police departments and St. George Aircraft Rescue 21. The Washington County Sheriff's Office bomb squad performed the check of the item.

St. George Regional flies eight flights daily with connections between Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Denver. It saw more than 102,000 enplanements in 2019, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
