When thinking about skin-care purchases, it's pretty standard to be hyper-focused on your face. Plenty of brands are dedicated to the many nuanced needs of the visage — but that doesn't mean the rest of your skin should be ignored.

The new Resurfacing Body Compound from U Beauty — a head-to-to take on the brand’s successful face-only formula — was a helpful reminder of that fact for me. During a launch event I attended for the product, U Beauty founder Tina Chen Craig explained that she’d created it because her friend Nicky Hilton Rothschild would use the brand's original, face-specific Resurfacing Compound all over her body to help smooth out texture. I’ve been dealing with some light keratosis pilaris (bumpy texture sometimes referred to as “strawberry skin” or “chicken skin”) on my arms for a few years now, so I knew exactly how I’d put the exfoliating formula to the test.

Spoiler alert: After two weeks of using the Body Compound regularly, my arms are significantly less bumpy and continue to feel even smoother with each use. (The brand also claims said exfoliation helps to “visibly reduce wrinkle depth” over time — as someone who is still in my early 20s, I can’t attest to that, but I certainly don’t mind the prevention aspect it might have.)

I first tried the formula — a silky, gel-like exfoliator that soaks in almost immediately upon contact — on its own after a shower, in place of my moisturizer. As an avid nighttime showerer, getting into bed with a sticky feeling from lotion is not ideal, so I was eager to see how compatible this serum would be with my sheets and sensory sensitivity. Because there’s virtually no greasiness, it dried down almost instantly, taking on an almost matte, powdery finish (but not a dry or chalky one). As it turns out, this makes it a rather perfect pre-bedtime product for me.

While the blend of potent-yet-gentle exfoliators (enzymes and glycolic, phytic, mandelic, lactic and salicylic acids) is the key to creating those intensely effective, bump-smoothing results, the formula is also enhanced with protective antioxidants, skin-plumping peptides, moisturizing shea butter and bioferments designed to help repair skin’s barrier function. So in addition to sloughing away dullness, uneven texture and tone, the multi-tasking formula is also supporting skin’s healthy function and ability to protect itself over time.

As someone who has paid a lot of attention to the skin on my face my whole life, I feel almost silly for never giving my body that same level of care.
