With Bob Stoops finishing up his second NCAA football season in retirement, it’s only natural that speculation over when he might get back in the game has started to ramp up.

The most recent example raised its fair share of eyebrows. After a disappointing 7-5 season that ended with a 52-21 humiliation at the hands of rival Alabama, Auburn “powerbrokers” reportedly held a meeting with Bob Stoops that went “unexpectedly well,” according to Josh Moon of the Alabama Reporter.

It didn’t take Stoops long to shoot down the report:

That’s a pretty firm denial from Stoops, who went 190-48 with 10 Big 12 titles and a national championship in 18 seasons as head coach at Oklahoma.

For now, Gus Malzahn is the head coach at Auburn and firing him would be a drastic move for the Tigers program, especially after giving him a seven-year, $49 million extension just last year. Not to mention the fact that Auburn AD Allen Greene said on the record earlier this month that Malzahn will be back in 2019.

Stoops’ retirement at 58 years old sent shockwaves through the college football world when it was announced. Of course, an early retirement also means plenty of time to speculate about a return.
