Blue Jays DFA struggling reliever Brad Hand after just one month with the team
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have designated left-hander Brad Hand for assignment, manager Charlie Montoyo announced on Tuesday.
A trade-deadline acquisition from the Washington Nationals, Hand made 11 appearances for the Blue Jays, but failed to maintain his solid numbers from past seasons. The 31-year-old posted a 7.27 ERA with a 1.85 WHIP during his time with Toronto.
The Blue Jays sent catcher Riley Adams — the team's No. 20 prospect according to MLB.com — to Washington in exchange for Hand. The reliever originally signed a one-year, $10.5-million deal with the Nationals last winter.
Hand was placed on the bereavement list on Aug 27.
In another roster move, Toronto activated catcher Danny Jansen from the injured list. The 26-year-old will catch for starter Hyun-Jin Ryu against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
Jansen was dealing with a right hamstring strain since the beginning of the month. He has a .176 batting average and .595 OPS with 10 RBIs and five home runs in the season.
The Blue Jays also optioned right-hander Trent Thornton to triple-A on Tuesday. Thornton has made 36 appearances this year, posting a 4.60 ERA over 47 innings pitched in relief.
