Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg is making good on his promise to help get Biden elected with a timely commitment to spend $100 million in the hotly contested state of Florida.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey said, “Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need. Mike believes that by investing in Florida it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.”

The massive cash infusion comes as polls indicate a tightening race in the key swing state, with the latest Marist/NBC News poll showing the candidates in a dead tie. According to a press release issued by Bloomberg’s political action committee, Independence USA, the spending will focus mostly on English and Spanish television and digital advertising.

As many outlets have reported, Biden’s support among Hispanic voters is much lower than the support Obama and Clinton received in the two previous presidential elections. A recent poll published by the Miami Herald found Biden trailing Trump by 1% (46% to 47%) with Hispanic voters in Miami Dade county. For several months now Trump has actively courted Cuban American voters in Miami by trying to paint Biden as a socialist with Castro-like tendencies.

Beating back that dishonest messaging will likely be a top priority for the Biden campaign as they seek ways to spend Bloomberg’s money and gear up for what will inevitably be a costly race to the finish line. According to an anonymous Democrat strategist quoted in the Washington Post, it will take “$15 million to $20 million to significantly move Biden’s numbers among Latinos, and $60 million to $70 million to get on television across the state over the next 51 days and have a real impact.”
