The Blacklist fans, Red (James Spader) and the Task Force are taking a breather.
Since the season 9 premiere in mid-October, The Blacklist has been airing new episodes for six consecutive weeks. Most recently, the NBC drama went on a three-week hiatus — and now, after returning for just one episode, folks will have to be patient again before seeing what happens next.
On December 6, The Blacklist aired its fall finale episode, where the newly reunited Task Force investigated a therapist who unknowingly had intel about the resurrection of an organized crime family. Meanwhile, after helping the crew get on the right track, Red went off on his own to conduct a personal investigation.
Even two years after her death, Liz (Megan Boone) is never far from Red’s thoughts, including when he gets a hunch that Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) might have betrayed his trust. Before the transfer of power was set to happen, Red gave Dembe a letter for Liz to read afterward. But as it turns out, Liz read it beforehand, leaving Red to think that maybe this could have played a part in her death.
When is The Blacklist coming back?
The Blacklist will return to NBC with a new episode on Thursday, January 6 at 8 p.m. ET. Neither the show nor the network has officially addressed the break, but the four-week hiatus is likely due to Christmas and New Year’s. That said, NBC did confirm the 2022 return date on the show's website.
Unfortunately, this means that Blacklist fans will have to wait to see what Red plans to do next. After finding out about what Dembe did, he immediately sat down with his new therapist and asked her what compels him to go back into the darkness instead of heading toward the light. When the therapist asked why he was bringing up the topic, Red didn’t hold back his feelings.
“I recently discovered I was betrayed by my oldest and closest friend. I’m apprehensive of the depth and breadth of my anger,” Red said.
What could this mean for their friendship?! Will Red confront Dembe? Will he start plotting revenge against him? Well, either way you already know what we'll be doing on the evening of January 6.
