Black Widow Finally Gets a Release Date
Freaking finally. After years of fans rallying to give the only woman on the original Avengers lineup her own movie, Disney/Marvel finally made a Black Widow flick—and then pulled it from theaters when everything shut down during the pandemic. The movie languished in limbo for months, but now it will finally see the light of day. We finally have a release date: July 9, when it'll hit the big screen and be available to view on Disney+ Premier Access for $30.
This is over a year after it was originally scheduled to come out. Black Widow was first slated for May 2020, then November 2020, then May 2021, per Indiewire. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, the movie follows ex-KGB spy Natasha Romanoff as she returns to her homeland after the events of Captain America: Civil War. From the trailers, it looks like the movie will also feature flashback sequences, creating something akin to an origin story. Romanoff's past as a killer is often alluded to in Avengers movies—both the crimes she's trying to make up for and the torturous training she endured along the way to becoming an agent. She was even forcibly sterilized by her program.
If Marvel intends to start a spin-off series with this movie, it would likely center on Pugh's character; Natasha is (spoiler) dead, having sacrificed herself near the end of Endgame.
On Twitter, fans were excited about the movie but disappointed to see that the release date had been pushed back yet again. Others noted that $30 is a little steep compared with regular movie prices, although we should add that this price point is generally for movies with family appeal. If you've got two parents and three kids, for instance, one payment of $30 is far, far less than it would cost to take five people to the cinema.
On the other hand, Natasha Romanoff made her first appearance in Iron Man 2, which came out in 2010. It's taken over a decade to get this character her own movie and to have fans actually see it. So what's another few months, am I right?
