If you’re in any way invested in the personal lives of Noah Cyrus and/or Lil Xan (or their relationship overall), buckle up and get ready to hear about some serious drama.
The two musicians fought and broke up on Monday, Sept. 3 as documented by their respective social media accounts. For those who are unfamiliar with the couple, 18-year-old Noah Cyrus, sister of Miley Cyrus, is a singer, and 21-year-old Lil Xan (a.k.a. Diego Leanos) is a budding rapper. The two came out as a couple toward the end of July 2018 and were documented together on the red carpet for the VMAs nearly a month later.
You might recognize them from a hilariously meme-able photo from the event:
This year, many celebrities are diving head-first into serious relationships (as celebs tend to do). For example, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson got matching tattoos after only a month of dating and were engaged very shortly after.
Lil Xan and Noah Cyrus were only dating for about a month before the drama unfolded, but judging by the severity of the emotions surrounding the event, the relationship seemed to be relatively well-established. So how did such a short-lived relationship explode into the social media frenzy that occurred on Labor Day? The whole situation is messy with a lot of he said/she said coming from both sides.
Believe who you want, but make sure that you have all of the juicy details before making a decision.
1. It all started with two vague images on Lil Xan’s Instagram story over the weekend.
The images were from the front-facing camera and had words typed over them. The first one read “I feel like I’m probably being cheated on,” and the second read “Bad things always happen to the good guys so ima (sic) be an a--hole from now on if you ain’t gang.”
The Instagram story led followers to question the two about what was going on between them, and fans didn’t have to wait long for many, many more details.
2. The two had recently recorded a song together, "Live or Die," and the music video was due to be released soon.
Amidst the drama, the release of the video has been canceled. With more additions to his Instagram story, Lil Xan posted several selfie videos describing the cancellation of the music video and accusing Noah Cyrus of using him.
He also said that he was heartbroken over the end of the relationship, nearly sobbing while describing his love for her.
3. Cyrus initially documented a meme that she sent Lil Xan as the reason for his accusation.

An NSFW image of a porn star’s body with singer Charlie Puth’s face photoshopped on it was shown in a text message screenshot that Cyrus posted, citing it as the reason that Lil Xan accused her of cheating. You can see Lil Xan’s “wtf” response to the image in the screenshot.
“This is the meme I sent Diego that made him think I’m cheating on him,” she said in the Instagram story caption. “Sorry, @charlieputh.”
However, Lil Xan quickly corrected her, saying that the meme was NOT, in fact, the reason he accused her of cheating. On his own Instagram story, he posted an image of Cyrus with EDM musician Ookay which was initially posted on her Instagram account, stating that she was, quote, “all over him.”
4. And THEN Cyrus accused Lil Xan of being the cheater.

On Instagram, Cyrus stated that she and Xan hadn’t hung out in a while. After about a week of Lil Xan allegedly dodging Cyrus’s phone calls and attempts to get together, she saw a picture of a girl on his Snapchat story around 2 A.M. She then FaceTimed him to confront him about the Snapchat and noticed a hickey on his neck.
He brushed it off as being a bruise (a classic but transparent excuse) and gave him the benefit of the doubt at the time. In a fan photo that she posted the next day, you can clearly see what is absolutely a hickey on the right side of Xan’s neck.
Noah later added to her Instagram story yet again, saying, "Cheaters like to accuse their partners of cheating to make themselves feel less guilt,” before posting another image expressing her heartbreak over the end of the relationship.
5. Both parties defended the legitimacy of the relationship.
Could this be enough common ground for a relationship do-over, though? Probably not. But apparently, someone somewhere accused the couple of being manufactured by Columbia Records in order to boost their collaborative music.
Both Noah Cyrus and Lil Xan insisted, among the drama, that the relationship was for real and so was the heartbreak that came with the others’ alleged cheating.
We may never know the truth about who cheated on who (or if both did), but we know that the relationship is over, leaving both musicians with some scars.
