Bindi Irwin Will Honor Her Late Father Steve Irwin in This Sweet Way at Her Wedding

Even though he won’t be there to walk her down the aisle, the late Steve Irwin will still play a big part in Bindi Irwin’s upcoming nuptials to Chandler Powell.

In a recent interview with the Courier Mail, Terri Irwin, Bindi’s mother and Steve’s widow, explained that the presence of the beloved, late “Crocodile Hunter” will be felt throughout their daughter’s special day.

“You know, I guess in some ways it’s not necessary because Steve will be there anyway,” she said. “I believe the people we love always are. You know, if you are missing someone, I think it’s helpful to know that scientifically you can’t actually create or extinguish life, you can only change its form.”

According to Terri, the plan is for guests in attendance to each light a candle in honor of Steve, who died in a tragic stingray attack back in 2006.

“So if you are grieving someone you loved very much,” she continued, “look to science and just remember when you boil the kettle and steam comes out, it doesn’t mean the water has gone.”

Bindi, who was just 8 years old when her father passed, had a strong bond with her father, as did her brother Robert; the family shares in Terri’s sentiments and have often been vocal about their love for the late TV personality. (Bindi’s brother Robert will walk her down the aisle in Steve’s place.)

“Dad, Today is your birthday,” Bindi wrote in an Instagram caption on what would have been Steve’s 58th birthday. “I had a strong cup of tea just how you liked it. I hugged Mum for you and told her how much we love her. Robert and I went on a hike through the mountains you cherished. I watched one of your documentaries with Chandler and shared stories about you. I walked through your office in the zoo and smiled at our old family photographs. Today and every day I miss you and love you beyond description. You’re always with me.”

Bindi got engaged to her longtime boyfriend last July, on her 21st birthday. The pair had been together close to six years at that point after meeting at the family’s Australian zoo.

“My heart is overflowing with gratitude, your kind comments mean the world to us,” Irwin captioned an Instagram post announcing the happy news. “For those wondering about my ring, I’m so happy to share. My ring features a lab grown diamond and is made with rose gold recycled metal. Chandler was incredibly thoughtful when he chose it, the ring captures the essence of who I am (with its vintage flare) and our life together, with the twisted band and scattered diamonds.”

The couple is set to wed at the Australian Zoo, a special spot for the couple given that it’s where they met, where they got engaged, and where they tend to dozens of wild animals. Last fall, the couple told Good Morning America that there will be “lots and lots” of animals around during the ceremony, and that Bindi plans to walk down the aisle holding a koala.

“We may be setting some new trends for weddings from here on out,” Bindi joked at the time.

In terms of her dress, Bindi said that she’s hoping to pay homage to Terri, whom she recently called “the most incredible woman I’ve ever known.”

“I left my dress until the last minute but I’m really excited about it,” she told GMA. “It’s really special. I love it so much because it kind of mimics my mom’s beautiful dress so I found something that paid tribute to her beautiful wedding dress and I’m thrilled.”
