The Buffalo Bills’ optimistic prospects for the 2020 season could change significantly if cornerback Tre’Davious White decides to not play.

White, one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, said on a Zoom call that he has not decided whether he will play in 2020 or opt out due to coronavirus concerns, according to Chris Brown of the Bills’ site. If White opts out that is a huge blow for the Bills’ defense.

The deadline for opt outs is Thursday afternoon, and the Bills will be anxiously waiting on White’s decision.

Tre’Davious White said he’s undecided about 2020

White has already shown concern about his health amid the pandemic. Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News said White didn’t go to workouts with his teammates in Washington because he didn’t want to risk flying with two young children at home.

White would arguably be the best player to opt out of the NFL season. More than 50 players have decided they will not play this year due to health concerns. There are some key players on that list, including Bills defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and cornerback E.J. Gaines. White could end up being the biggest name.

White, a first-round pick in 2017, was a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro last season. The Bills’ defense is one of the best in football and White is a key part of it. It’s hard to argue with any player who prioritizes his health and family over football this year. Football-wise, it would be impossible for the Bills to replace White if he sits out.

Deadline for opting out is Thursday

The Bills have not won a division title since 1995. They’re arguably the AFC East favorites this season. The New England Patriots were hit hard by opt-outs and Tom Brady left in free agency.

White’s decision could change that outlook. Losing Lotulelei was a big blow to the Bills’ run defense and White’s absence would affect the pass defense.

Like plenty of other teams, the Bills will be waiting for Thursday’s deadline, seeing if they lose White or any other player for the season.
