Billie Eilish, Jackson Wang & Jinyoung of GOT7, and More: Best New Music

This week’s best new music is pretty stacked: Billie Eilish dropped her highly anticipated Happier Than Ever album on July 30th. Plus, GOT7 dominates as members Jinyoung and Jackson Wang both release solo tracks, “Dive” and “Drive You Home,” respectively.

Love is most certainly in the air thanks to Jackson, Angel + Dren, Kehlani and Kiana Ledé all releasing tracks that touch on affairs of the heart. Kiana Ledé and Kehlani heat things up with the spicy visuals for their collaborative track, “Ur Best Friend.” Meanwhile, Su Lee addresses the all-too-relatable post-lockdown struggle of forgetting how to socialize in “Socially Alive,” as she gears up for her new EP, Box Room Dreams and Michi takes cheeky jabs at men who strut around with an inflated sense of self as though they’re God’s gift to the planet.

Exciting times, folks. Here’s what you should add to your playlist this week:

Billie Eilish, “Happier Than Ever”

Billie Eillish’s Happier Than Ever album is here and well, we couldn’t be happier. The title track on the project is told from the perspective of a person who has found the strength to move on from a toxic lover. Despite the title, the song has somewhat of a melancholic vibe – like much of the album. “Almost none of the songs on this album are joyful,” Billie told Rolling Stone of her sophomore project, which broaches the challenging subjects of emotional abuse and trust issues as well as healing and growth. The entire album was written by Billie and her brother, Finneas.

Jackson Wang, Internet Money “Drive You Home”

Jackson Wang, with help from Internet Money, efficiently captures the nuances of love and heartbreak in “Drive You Home.” The sentimental track and accompanying music video explores love and loss over the backdrop of The Cars’ 1984 single, “Drive.” Jackson hopes that fans will draw their own conclusions after having watched the visuals for “Drive You Home.” "I've always explained my music videos, the backstory and the plot, to my audiences,” the Hong Kong-born singer said in a press statement. “But with this visual, 10 people can watch it and have 10 different feelings. I can't wait for the fans to interpret it." His sophomore album is slated for release this fall.

Jinyoung, “Dive”

Jinyoung pulled a Beyoncé this week when he surprised fans with the digital release of his brand new single, “Dive.” Though the lyrics suggest it to be a love song, Jinyoung explained in a statement shared with The Korea Herald that the song is actually about pursuit and belief, which was, in part, inspired by his love of and longing for the sea. “It’s a song about a sort of belief that if you continuously accept something, whether it’s people, love, skills, growth, or anything else, there will come a time when you will find it filled endlessly like the sea,” Jinyoung said of the track, according to a translation provided by Soompi.

Kiana Ledé & Kehlani, “Ur Best Friend”

This week, Kiana Ledé and Kehlani released the ultra-sensual, Kehlani-directed visuals for their sultry track, “Ur Best Friend.” The slow jam tells of an illicit affair between a woman and her man’s best friend. Throughout the track, Kiana and Kehlani, who sing from the perspectives of the forbidden lovers, croon about the messy entanglement. They lament over the boldness of their betrayal and come to the realization that they are only loyal to one another.

Angel + Dren, “Nirvana”

Angel + Dren are serving up smooth summertime vibes with their song and accompanying music video, “Nirvana.” The sister-duo reminds us of the nostalgic nature of summer romance. If you appreciate the ‘90s undertone of “Nirvana,” you’ll definitely want to give their forthcoming EP, Dark Summer, a listen. It’s slated for release this fall.

Su Lee, “Socially Alive”

Su Lee is back with another super-relatable track. “Socially Alive,” out today, addresses a dilemma that many have faced as the world reopens amidst the pandemic: relearning how to socialize while simultaneously grappling with feelings of isolation. "'Socially Alive' is my confession of what goes through my mind when I’m around people,” Su said of the track. “Regardless of how it may appear on the outside, I’m always terrified that I’ll say or do something stupid." Su’s forthcoming self-produced EP, Box Room Dreams, will be released on August 26th.

Michi, “Talk Big”

Shifting gears, Michi takes aim at men with inflated egos in her new track, “Talk Big.” The soothing mid-tempo track was inspired by the singer’s personal experiences with cocky guys. “Having this platform now, the song is a form of release and a way to call out that guy whose head is up his own ass,” the singer says of the R&B-influenced track. “ Some people can just be trash, and ‘Talk Big’ is my moment to check them in the most cheeky way possible.”
