Bill Murray reprised his role from Groundhog Day in a special Super Bowl commercial on Sunday.

As in the 1993 movie, Murray’s character Phil Connors wakes up every morning trapped in the same day, which keeps replaying itself on a loop.

He even runs into Ned Ryerson, his acquaintance from the original film.

In a stunt echoing an infamous Groundhog Day moment, Phil kidnaps the groundhog – but absconds in a shiny new Jeep, since this is an ad for the American brand.

He goes on to experience more antics involving the bright orange vehicle, always in the company of Punxsutawney Phil, the mascot of the day.

It’s been 27 years since Groundhog Day, also starring Andie MacDowell, was released.

The movie won the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1994 and remains a fan favourite to this day – as evidenced by the warm reception the commercial received on social media.

Several Twitter users deemed it the best ad of the night, calling it “hilarious”.
