The Biggest Mistake the Golden Globes Made

The 80th Golden Globes were an overall successful ceremony, with a number of emotional speeches, stunning looks and powerful tributes. However, there was one element that made the ceremony somewhat...awkward, and we definitely feel for pianist Chloe Flower.

At this year's ceremony, the 37-year-old composer was tasked with playing the piano during breaks of the show. However, this quickly led to a major misconception, as the winners believed Flower was the one responsible for starting the “play-off” music (which was also piano music for some reason) that hints to winners that they need to wrap up their speeches.

Although the evening began without a problem, soon several of the high-profile winners, like Michelle Yeoh and Austin Butler, made comments which led viewers to believe the pianist was playing music over their speeches. However, it was actually just a track being played over the speakers.

Unfortunately, viewers quickly took to social media to criticize the musician, and she set the record straight by making a tweet during the middle of the ceremony, which said: “I would never play piano over people’s speeches!! I’m only playing when you see me on camera! #goldenglobes.”

In the comments, fans quickly showed their support for Flower, like one user who said, “You’re doing a great job with the intros after each break.” And another commented, “You’re above the fray, and playing beautifully too. So happy you’re on!”

However, in a night full of powerful speeches from Yeoh, Butler, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Coolidge, Ke Huy Quan, Ryan Murphy and so many more, one can't help but wonder if there's a better way to structure the ceremony so that the winners don't have to be cut off. And it was helpful that host Jerrod Carmichael set the record straight halfway through the show (to take the heat off Flower), but it's a shame that the blame fell to the musician in the first place.

We're thinking next year they bring Flower back (and that play-off music can be a guitar so that there isn't any confusion).
