One of the many perks of being Allure's digital beauty editor is that I got an early peek at a list of makeup launching in the new year. It was like looking into a crystal ball, which revealed all of the major product trends we'll be seeing pop up in 2020. From what I can tell, the newest lipsticks, foundations, brow products, and more are foolproof and better for your skin than in years past. Many are also sure to give you your most radiant complexion yet — no highlighter needed.
1. Pearl-Infused Concealers
The pearl makeup trend you're about to see a lot more of goes beyond gluing jewels onto your face. They're also being crushed up into microfine particles and added to concealers to create brightening formulas. The Tarte Shape Tape Glow Wand, Nyx Born to Glow Radiant Concealer, and many more to come instantly add radiance to your complexion and melt into skin without any noticeable cakiness.
Pick one in a shade lighter than your skin tone to dab onto your undereye area and highlight the high points of your face.
2. Primers for All
One primer doesn't have to fit all, and the newest options entering the market in the new year prove just that. Several brands are coming out with a handful of options tailored to your specific needs — whether they are based on your skin type or desired effect. Take Benefit Cosmetics's the Porefessional Hydrate Primer, for example, which helps moisturize and plump skin with hyaluronic acid. There's also the Neutrogena Shine Control Matte Booster Face Primer + Serum, which zaps away oil all day long with the help of rice protein.
I can't reveal others just yet, but you're sure to notice launches from old-school favorites, as well as some from a brand that's never done complexion before.
No matter which one you end up shopping in 2020, "The trick with any primer is to make sure it’s applied in a small dime-to-nickel-size amount and it's fully blended in first [before going in with foundation]," says makeup artist Allan Avendaño.
3. Vinyl Lips
In 2020, you may find that having lips so shiny your friends can see their reflection is the ultimate look. Vinyl lip products will be aplenty to make it happen. Go clear with the Em Cosmetics Morning Dew Crystal Lip Gloss or pick one packed with pigment like the MAC Patent Paint Lip Lacquer and Stila Shine Fever Lip Vinyl.
4. Cleaner Nail Polish
Indie brands like Sundays and tenoverten have set a precedent for non-toxic polishes free of ingredients like camphor, formaldehyde, and parabens. Mainstream brands will be catching on in a major way in 2020, and Sally Hansen is front and center with its vegan, plant-based line called Good. Kind. Pure.. The colorful array of paints are 16-free, meaning they aren't formulated with sulfates, animal-derived ingredients, or acetone.
5. See-Through Blush
K-beauty isn't just influencing stateside skin-care products. It's about to make more moves in the makeup space come 2020. While in Seoul, South Korea, back in April 2019, I noticed dozens of beauty brands offered thin, watery blushes. Barring from VDL's Creamy Stick Jelly, Korean see-through blushes can be difficult to find in America.
Luckily, a handful of U.S. brands will soon be dropping their own variations, including the CoverGirl Clean Fresh Cream Blush and Maybelline New York Cheek Heat. All tout lightweight formulas that are impossible to overdo and give cheeks a subtle, watercolor-like tint.
6. Quick Brow Products
If you haven't indulged in a brow lamination or microblading treatment as a low-maintenance way to keep your brows in peak condition, don't worry, a bevy of new brow products can help you get the same results stat. Just brush the Maybelline New York Brow Fast Sculpt through your arches and go to speedily fill in gaps and tame unruliness all at once.
CoverGirl's Easy Breezy Brow Draw and Fill Brow Tool, on the other hand, lets you quickly define your brows with a slanted pencil on one end and a powder on the other.
7. Pollution-Protecting Foundation
Adding an extra layer of defense on your skin against pollution comes in the form of foundation in 2020. Brands are combining the antioxidant benefits of serums with the coverage of foundation to protect against the wrinkle-forming effects of environmental aggressors, not only in the air but also blue light. Yup, the newest foundations will even help shield us from our phones. In case you didn't know, "Scientific data points to blue light, in general, penetrating into the skin contributing to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and aging, so, the more time we spend on our devices, the worse off our skin might be," says Shari Marchbein, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor at New York University. So might as well reach for a foundation with pollution-defending ingredients.
The Revlon Photoready Candid Glow Anti-Pollution Foundation is spiked with vitamin E, which helps fight off free radicals while soothing skin. If you prefer powder, try the Urban Decay Stay Naked The Fix Powder Foundation, which harnesses the power of moringa seed oil.
8. Blurred Lip Crayons
Blurred and blotted lips have long been a trend, but now, products are becoming intentional. You won't need to finesse stains and lipsticks to make them look diffused around the edges of your lips. With the Nyx Dazed & Diffused Blurring Lipstick and L'Oréal Paris Infallible Matte Lip Crayon, you'll get the dreamy effect straight out of the tube.
