How Close Is Beyoncé to Reaching EGOT Status?

Just how close is Beyoncé to achieving EGOT status?

Being an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award) winner is a prestigious honor for anyone who works in the entertainment industry, especially given that only 17 people hold the title. Now that Beyoncé has nabbed her first Academy Award nomination, she's inching toward owning the title herself.

Below, see how Beyoncé's odds look so far.

Emmys

The singer's acclaimed Netflix special, Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, which chronicled the inner workings of her 2018 Coachella headliner performance, received six nominations, but lost in every category. Beyoncé herself was nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, Outstanding Music Direction, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special, and Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded).

She was also previously nominated for her visual album, Lemonade, in 2016 and for her HBO special, On the Run Tour: Beyoncé and Jay-Z, in 2015.

Grammys

Beyoncé is now the most awarded artist in Grammy history. The singer picked up four awards at the 2023 Grammys, bumping up her total Grammy win count to 32 and thus breaking the record that was previously held by Georg Solti.

Beyoncé also made Grammys history when the Recording Academy announced in 2022 that she had scooped up nine nominations, rounding out her overall Grammy nominations count to 88. With these new nods under her belt, Beyoncé is now one of the most-nominated artists ever, tying with her husband, Jay-Z, who also holds 88 nominations. She is also now the first female artist to reach 80 nominations.

Oscars

Beyoncé earned her first Oscar nomination last year, for Best Original Song for "Be Alive," featured in the film King Richard, though the award ultimately went to Billie Eilish and Finneas for "No Time to Die."

Fans previously expected her to receive an Oscar nom for her work on "Spirit," featured on The Lion King soundtrack—especially after she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution. However, the Academy ended up not nominating the song, and Bey was subsequently snubbed.

She also came close to an Oscar nomination for the 2006 film Dreamgirls, in which she stars as Deena Jones and co-wrote the original song, "Listen," along with Henry Krieger, Anne Preven, and Scott Cutler. However, according to the Academy’s rules, “No more than two statuettes will normally be given in the Original Song category. A third statuette may be awarded when there are three essentially equal contributors to a song.” As a result, Krieger, Preven, and Cutler were nominated for the song, while Beyoncé was left out.

Still, she ended up receiving Golden Globe nominations for her work in Dreamgirls, namely in the categories for Best Original Song and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture.

Tonys

The Tonys, which recognizes Broadway productions, are an awards category Beyoncé has yet to skim the surface of. But, knowing her glass-ceiling-shattering capabilities, a Beyoncé Tony acceptance speech may yet still be in our midst.
