From Harper's BAZAAR

  • Beyoncé's Black Is King visual album debuts July 31 on Disney+.

  • The singer has said that the work will "present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message."

  • The preview shows that Naomi Campbell, Kelly Rowland, Lupita Nyong'o, Jay-Z, and model Adut Akech also appear in the visuals.

Beyoncé's forthcoming visual album, Black Is King, will be out in a matter of hours, and although she's shared stunning teasers of the resplendent wardrobe, choreography, and sets, nothing will compare to experiencing the full work in all its glory. Originally filmed as a companion piece to her album The Lion King: The Gift, the project will hit Disney+ on July 31, a little more than a year after the Lion King remake, in which Beyoncé voiced Nala, premiered. Look out for the new release starting 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET on the platform.

While announcing the visual project last month, Bey called Black Is King a "labor of love" that she spent "filming, researching and editing day and night for the past year." Though it was originally intended for The Lion King's 2019 release, the artist pointed out the significance of releasing the work this summer, in the wake of a national reckoning against racism and police brutality.

"The events of 2020 have made the film's vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey," Beyoncé wrote on Instagram at the time. "We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change. I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books."

She added, "With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy."
