Older travellers reveal their top 10 world landmarks to visit
Travellers over the age of 55 have revealed the world landmarks at the top of their bucket lists.
Niagara Falls, the Great Wall of China and the archaeological city of Petra in southern Jordan were among those on the top 10, as voted by 1,836 Brits aged over 55 years old in a survey.
The Galapagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the South Pacific, and Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains also featured.
Three European destinations – the ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii, the Acropolis of Athens and Blue Lagoon in Iceland – made the list, while other notable closer-to-home landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, did not feature – assumedly because over-55s had already been able to visit.
In the same research, which was conducted by luxury cruise company Riviera Travel, almost three quarters (72%) of participants said they believe now is the best time to travel, compared to only 11% who said travelling would have proved better between the ages of 18 and 34.
Will Sarson, Head of Specialist Product, at Riviera Travel said of the findings: “People often think that, as you get older, your appetite for exploration declines. Our survey of British over 55s sought to prove that a sense of adventure doesn’t diminish with age.
“And, so it has proved. Not only do a majority of over 55s have a travel must- see, but they can see that now is the best time to complete it.
“Free from the burdens of a young family and not limited by financial or work-related constraints, people actually find more freedom to explore in older age than when they are young.”
