We know, we know — between maskne and dealing with un-breathable face coverings, the last thing you probably want on your skin is another layer of product right now. But if you're gearing up for one last socially-distanced hurrah this LDW, then both a mask and a bottle of sunscreen top the list of safe outdoor essentials.
"Just like sun-protective clothing, masks will physically block some UV light," NYC-based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, tells us. "If you are wearing a face mask on a regular basis, then you may develop a tan line even from everyday exposure."
No thanks! Enter sunscreen, which will ensure you're fully protected and can help prevent unwanted tanning to an extent. "I recommend mineral-based sunscreens — zinc oxide not only gives broad-spectrum UV protection, but also forms a physical barrier between your skin and the face mask," Dr. Zeichner explains. One formula to skip if you're concerned about transfer? "Tinted sunscreen can be used, but they are much more likely to stain or soil your face mask," he adds.
Ahead, we've compiled our favorite lightweight sunscreens to keep on rotation while mask-wearing protocols remain in effect.

Months into quarantine, and we've likely all experienced different versions of the following scenario: You're trying to stay active by going on socially-distanced walks or jogs outside, only to notice that in no time, your masked mouth-breathing is starting to creep into Darth Vader territory. It might even be hard to maintain your normal pace if your face covering is not exactly allowing you to breathe normally, which — obviously — is an issue. Not one we're ready to throw down on but certainly a nuisance. Luckily, you've got options when it comes to breathable, fitness-adjacent face masks that allow you to stay cool and comfortable while outdoors. Unsurprisingly, top fitness brands like Adidas, Under Armour, and Outdoor Voices have been leading the charge with coverings that are made with athletes and workout enthusiasts in mind. Ever since the pandemic took hold, a number of interesting fashion trends have come to light. There was the QuarantinePillowChallenge, which involved influencers swapping out mini dresses for pillows and accessorizing with Gucci and Chanel belts and bags. Next up: JacquemusAtHome, a strangely satisfying viral trend, coined by designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, that involved making bras out of croissants and heels out of tropical fruit and toilet rolls. Then there was the nightgown dress trend, as if we needed yet another excuse not to get dressed in the morning. But the latest fashion item to garner attention during the pandemic is not entirely surprising: mask accessories. If you’ve spent time on Instagram lately, you’ve probably noticed an uptick in face masks that aren’t just protective and fashionable, but also feature additional accessories, from éliou's glass-beaded chains reminiscent of Croakies to oversize ribbons that come with Collina Strada's version. Scrunchie-like "ties," chunky acetate chains, and beaded designs that go over the masks are some of the other accessories that have come to decorate this essential item lately. Ahead, see accessories that are giving masks — that we should all continue to wear to curb the spread of the virus — a stylish twist. COVID-19 has been declared a global pandemic.
