Choosing the perfect pair of sunglasses is a matter of style, affordability, and protection. Emphasis on protection—from UV rays to be specific.
“UV radiation can cause molecules in our body to become unstable free radicals that ultimately can cause irreversible damage to the retina," says Dr. Tanya Khan, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist at Texan Eye in Austin, TX. Basically, the retina is the nerve tissue in the back of the eye that converts light energy into an image, and once that's impaired and doesn't get treated, it could lead to vision loss.
Your vision isn't the only thing that can be affected if you forget your shades at home. UV rays can cause premature aging, burns, and even skin cancer. “I commonly detect eyelid cancer because patients neglect sun protection,” Dr. Khan says.
To avoid all these bad endings, make sure the lenses in your prospective sunnies defend against UVA and UVB rays (this is often labeled as UV400). "This will provide protection from light rays up to 400 nanometers in wavelength,” Dr. Khan explains.
Whether you're booking an exotic vacay or planning to BBQ in the backyard all summer, the top-rated sunglasses ahead will keep your eyes healthy no matter where you are. Oh! And they're broken down by face shape, so you'll know which ones suit your features best.
Leland: It's not going to be "easy" for anyone right now. We all have to do our best to follow the guidelines established. It is the only way we are going to get back to our normal way of life we had weeks ago. Everyone needs to adhere to them and do the best they can. The President is only one man, and he is not a medical expert. He has to follow and listen to those that are like Dr. Fauci and Birx. If they tell him we cannot "open" our Country and get back to business by April 30th, then he will make that decision when it comes. Until April 30th, we need to shelter in place. We can do this America. The Americans that lived through the Flu Epidemic in 1918 did not have the technology and medicine we do now. They suffered and got through it. We will, too. I am optimistic we will beat this and get back to a normal life. Stay safe everyone.
