We checked in with a texture expert. Yep, that's a thing.
You may be a curl pattern aficionado who knows her own unique blend of 4C and 4B hair to a tee. But for some of us the basics aren’t quite tha...basic. We have major questions: What is 4C hair, exactly? How do I know if I have it? And what products do I use to take care of it?
Hair that is 4C patterned is the tightest curl. “To tell if you have 4C hair, wet it to get it to its natural state (which is the the only way you can see your true curl pattern) and compare it to a curl chart,” says Stacey Ciceron, hair stylist and Oribe Brand Ambassador.
Because of the coiled shape of the strand, oil from the scalp can’t travel down its the length of the hair. So 4C hair tends to be the driest. Ciceron recommends looking for shampoos and products that provide a lot of moisture, protection and deep conditioning. “It’s important to look for ingredients that are hydrating and will seal the hair, like humectants, glycerin, honey, and butters. Avoid heavy waxes, parabens, sodium chloride, alcohols and anything that dries or coats the hair,” says Ciceron.
Also, remember your curl pattern does not determine other characteristics of your hair, like hair thickness, which describes its fineness (thin strands) or coarseness (thick strands). 4C hair can be anywhere on that spectrum. “My number one tip would be to know and understand your hair,” she says, suggesting you determine your hair density and porosity, which refers to its ability to absorb moisture. To get to know your hair, you can start by experimenting with some of these expert-approved (and tested) 4C curly hair products.
Anonymous: McRaven said that during a military ceremony at Fort Bragg, N.C., last week, a retired four-star general grabbed his arm and shouted, “I don’t like the Democrats, but Trump is destroying the Republic!” Adm. William McRaven and President Trump (Photos: Robert Daemmrich Photography Inc/Corbis via Getty Images, Alex Wong/Getty Images)More “Those words echoed with me throughout the week,” McRaven wrote. “We are not the most powerful nation in the world because of our aircraft carriers, our economy, or our seat at the United Nations Security Council. We are the most powerful nation in the world because we try to be the good guys. We are the most powerful nation in the world because our ideals of universal freedom and equality have been backed up by our belief that we were champions of justice, the protectors of the less fortunate. “But, if we don’t care about our values,” he continued, “if we don’t care about duty and honor, if we don’t help the weak and stand up against oppression and injustice — what will happen to the Kurds, the Iraqis, the Afghans, the Syrians, the Rohingyas, the South Sudanese and the millions of people under the boot of tyranny or left abandoned by their failing states? “President Trump seems to believe that these qualities are unimportant or show weakness,” McRaven added. “He is wrong. These are the virtues that have sustained this nation for the past 243 years. If we hope to continue to lead the world and inspire a new generation of young men and women to our cause, then we must embrace these values now more than ever.” And if not, “then it is time for a new person in the Oval Office — Republican, Democrat or independent — the sooner, the better,” he wrote. “The fate of our Republic depends upon it.” _____ Download the Yahoo News app to customize your experience.
