These Are the Best Places to Retire in the United States

The U.S. News & World Report released their official rankings.

Whether you're looking to relocate to a beachside retreat or enjoy fresh, crisp air in the mountains, starting a new post-retirement life in a new location is appealing to many Americans. The U.S. News & World Report has released a list of the best retirement locations in the United States after evaluating 150 of the most populated metropolitan areas. To assess the best places to retire, the organization surveyed more than 3,000 individuals both nearing and at the retirement age of 60 or older.

Unsurprisingly, the most popular state to retire in 2021 is Florida, and the top four cities to retire in are Sarasota, Florida; Fort Meyers, Florida; Port St. Lucie, Florida; and Naples, Florida. The Sunshine State was closely followed by Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 2019, a study by the Popular Reference Bureau found that Florida had the second-highest percentage of its state population aged 65 or older at 20.5 percent (Maine took the top spot).

The U.S. News & World Report acknowledged that "warm temperatures year-round, award-winning beaches, and a thriving arts and cultural scene have made Sarasota a go-to place for retirees and families." On a scale of 1 to 10, the organization ranked Sarasota's desirability as an 8, its quality of life as a 7.2, and the overall value of the city as a 5.7.

The other cities that took the top 10 spots include Ocala, Florida; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Asheville, North Carolina; Miami, Florida; and Melbourne, Florida. If you consider yourself a music lover, then maybe you'd be happy in Nashville, Chattanooga, or Knoxville, Tennessee, all of which broke the top 30 places to retire. Five of the largest cities in Texas—Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso—were also named some of the best places to retire.
