As much as I love a good status scented candle, I am just as enthusiastic about the grocery store aromatherapy section—you know, the one set up right next to the epsom salts and the refrigerated display of probiotic supplements. In the vast maze of any grocery store’s layout, I always manage to be shepherded by some strange force to that fragrant little corner. But I don’t mind at all. In fact, the aromatherapy sprays found there have become one of my favorite housekeeping products—and the Aura Cacia lavender mist is the best of them all.
Unlike the noxious scents you might find in the air freshener aisle a few paces away, Aura Cacia lavender spray contains real lavender essential oils, and therefore has all the complex terpene layers you pick up when sticking your face into a real lavender bush. It isn’t terribly potent, so the risk of overuse is extremely low. And it’s inexpensive and easy to find. I spray it all over my house. I spray it on my pillows before bed. I sometimes spray it on myself. It’s a subtle finishing touch after cleaning the kitchen. It’s a good tool to keep in your arsenal for freshening up your space, or to bring yourself a little bit of tranquil relief.
Some complain that the Aura Cacia lavender spray is not potent enough, but I think its relatively dilute scent is actually a drawing point. High-end room sprays with more potent, concentrated essential oils often overwhelm with too liberal a spritzing session and make for a house perfumed to a level that’s verging on Sunday matinee theater lobby. The Aura Cacia mist, on the other hand, settles into your existing bouquet of house smells, offering the illusion that your house always has just a tinge of lavender scent, as if by magic. This is just how you live, in a delicate lavender-scented sanctum.
Aromatherapy mist blends in harmoniously with any other smells in your house rather than masking them, so it isn’t the best choice for a bathroom spray or for a shoe-filled mudroom. But beyond these particularly noxious scenarios, having a simple, affordable, naturalistic scent that you can spray anywhere and everywhere without any sort of hesitation is an easy way to make your living space a little more pleasant.
