TOP FLIGHT: THE BERRY LIP

Makeup artist Marisa Anhaltzer unveils her go-to products to achieve the bold fall hue.

It started with silent film starlet Clara Bow in the ’20s, sparked a sultry-grunge sensation on Liv Tyler and Kate Moss in the ’90s, and stunned on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley at this year’s Met Ball. With the possible exception of red, there’s no lip color more iconic—or sensual—than a saturated berry. That said, many civilians shy away from the color, fearing fifty shades of goth. Strategically chosen and applied, however, berry is a color that can flatter everyone. The trick? Finding a texture that doesn’t overplay your look or overpower your complexion. To that end, The Violet Files turned to in-house makeup artist Marisa Anhaltzer, an expert in balancing the bold lip with a subtle eye, who divulges her favorite products for every skin tone and reveals how to wear them.

THE DOUBLE-DUTY POT ROUGE

This multipurpose hydrating formula is infused with organic ingredients like coconut and jojoba oil. Anhaltzer adds, “You can put it on your cheeks and your lips and it gives off a more balmy, glossy finish.”

Anhaltzer calls this hydrating, wax-free product the perfect choice for a daytime pout because of its particularly lightweight consistency.

THE MATTE MAKER

“This is really bold and has a pretty berry color,” says Anhaltzer. “I like to let the lip speak for itself and have its moment.” She advises against pairing the color with a smoky eye (overkill), suggesting black liquid or gel eyeliner instead.

THE BASIC BALM

Not everyone is a fan of a matte lip, which can be drying. Anhaltzer advocates for switching over to this tinted lip treatment. “You can wear it by itself as a much lighter berry look,” she says, “but it’s also a great addition to a bolder, dryer, more matte berry lip as well.”

THE PAINTERLY PIGMENT

“It’s this perfect berry wine stain,” says Anhaltzer. “You can wear that by itself or use a lip balm on top, like the By Terry Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur Lip Balm in Bloom Berry.”

THE STAY-ALL-DAY SOLUTION

This highly pigmented liquid lipstick is not for wallflowers—its matte finish, delivered via a doe-foot applicator, provides not-insignificant coverage. A word to the wise, Anhaltzer cautions, “With such a bold color you can play with the eyes a little bit, but you want to keep it pretty light and keep the skin fresh.”
