The Best Eyebrow Growth Serums for Fuller, Bolder Arches, According to Dermatologists

Gone are the days of over-plucking eyebrows to a mere pencil-thin line—instead, the new #browgoals are thick, borderline-bushy brows often seen on supermodels, celebrities, and all over your Instagram feed. With this beauty trend comes the desire for many to spruce up their brows into the fullest, boldest arches—and that’s where eyebrow growth serums come into the picture.

The latest non-prescription brow serums are designed to enhance the thickness of the brow hairs you do have and help stimulate growth in areas that are sparse. You don't need to see a doctor to get a serum (as you do with the prescription lash-and-brow enhancer Latisse). Apply once or twice a day (following package directions), and some can show results in as little as two weeks.

What the pros say

There are dozens of over-the-counter brow serums, but they're not all created equal, stresses Francesca Fusco, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. The best of these over-the-counter formulas pack peptides, adds Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Peptides are "messengers designed to do a specific job—in this case, encourage hair growth and healthy hair follicle activity," he says. Debra Jaliman, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist, agrees, noting that “peptides aid in creating a healthy foundation for the brows.”

And while many of the most effective serums include peptides, it’s important to note that they could cause irritation on those with sensitive skin. (Some other serums rely only on essential oils, which simply strengthen the hair you already have.)

Another key ingredient to look for is biotin, which is “known to improve hair health,” Dr. Jaliman tells Health. “It’s important for energy production to help promote the growth of additional hair follicles,” she adds. Dr. Jaliman also recommends choosing a formula that contains keratin, the protein that strengthens hair. And for even more effectiveness, look for serums that include fatty acids—like lipids, panthenol, or B vitamins—which can condition, thicken, and moisturize brows.

According to Dr. Jaliman, many growth serums that are marketed for eyelashes can be used on eyebrows, too, and are just as effective there. “They contain very similar ingredients that add fullness and promote some new growth,” she says.

As with any beauty product, some (often pricier) formulas will be more effective than others. But even if you don’t see the results you were hoping for, they can’t hurt—and at the very least, you’ll simply be conditioning your brow hairs. “If used correctly and as directed they are very safe for use around the eye area, and they do work,” says Dr. Jaliman.

What we say

Although brow regrowth doesn't happen overnight, the picks below use dermatologist-recommended ingredients to add fullness and condition hair follicles to encourage growth. Plus, most of these options—including RapidBrow, VegaBrow, and RevitaBrow—were personally selected by our three derms, so you can trust that they’re the best of the best. No matter which serum you try, if you use it regularly, you should see a boost in the condition of your arches.

If it’s serious brow rehab you're after, Dr. Fusco recommends going with RapidBrow, a popular serum that’s chock-full of nourishing, strengthening elements. "RapidBrow has proved to be the go-to among my patients," she says, adding that while the vast majority of people tolerate peptide-based serums well, this may not be the best option for anyone with super sensitive skin. Its fast-acting formula contains all of the star ingredients that our derms say are most effective in growth serums: peptides, panthenol, biotin, and keratin.

If you love a good multi-tasking beauty product, this is the best choice for you. As Dr. Jaliman mentioned, just because a growth serum is marketed towards eyelashes, that doesn’t mean it can’t effectively work on brows, too. Case in point: This RapidLash serum, which comes from the brand behind the RapidBrow serum, above, comes personally recommended by Dr. Jaliman. She “really likes this serum” because it “contains ingredients that add fullness and can promote some new growth”—on both your brows and lashes.

Just as the name suggests, this affordable option can give a serious boost to thinning or sparse brows. The potent yet gentle formula includes derm-recommended growth ingredients, like vitamin b5 and panthenol, along with natural fruit extracts—like grape stem cells—to nourish, protect, and strengthen hair follicles for fuller, bolder brows over time. Plus, 86% of customers gave the serum a positive review, with many noting how effective it is for filling in thin brows.

One shopper said, “OMG, it really works! I had absolutely no expectations of this product working even after reading all the glowing reviews, I'm a skeptic. My eyebrows are pathetic due to thyroid issues, one was half gone. After 15 days I have two normal eyebrows again! I can't believe it! I can't wait to have my brows waxed and shaped again. Ladies, give this product a try, you won't be disappointed!”

The safe, vegan formula can give you results as quickly as 30 days with consistent, once-a-day use. Most Affordable: Organys Lash & Brow Serum

While many eyelash and eyebrow regrowth serums cost a pretty penny, you don’t always have to shell out tons of money to see results—and this under-$25 option proves that. Despite the low price point, shoppers say it really works. Plus, the gentle formula contains dermatologist-recommended ingredients—including keratin and peptides—for optimal strengthening and thickening benefits, along with botanical-based oils like green tea and saw palmetto to replenish weak or thinning hair follicles.

What’s more, many customers say they saw results from the serum way sooner than expected. One user wrote, “It’s working!! I've only been using this product for a week or so and did not expect to see results so soon and was not going to write a review without seeing some kind of growth. Many years ago I over plucked my brows on the ends and did not expect to ever see growth there again. But I could see this morning that they're filling in! My brows are very light and I think more hairs must be growing throughout the brow because the whole thing is more visible.”
