International Dog Day has been celebrated on 26 August every year since 2004.

Initially started by US pet expert, animal rescue advocate, dog trainer, and author, Colleen Paige, it has a two-fold mission: To remind people to adopt rescue dogs (and not to buy from pet stores, backyard breeders or anywhere unofficial) and to celebrate just how damn special our canine companions are.

Think about it: our furry bezzies are by our side through thick and thin, they don't judge us, they lift us up when we're down and they've got an unending well of love and devotion shower us with.

Dogs have also been scientifically proven to boost our wellbeing, too, with numerous studies proving that pooches can alleviate stress and anxiety.

In fact, loads of studies have found that the mere act of patting a familiar dog lowers blood pressure, heart rate, slows breathing and loosens muscle tension.

So the least we can do is to not only shower them with love, security, routine, their favourite walks and belly rubs, but also buy them some treats and toys they'll enjoy and watch their furry faces light up this International Dog Day (or in fact any day).

Just remember to keep treats to a minimum to avoid unbalancing their diet and causing them harm.
