Rain boots are a must when the weather starts to turn, but it can be tricky to find a pair that is as comfortable and stylish as your favorite pair of shoes.

“Rain boots can be hard on your feet,” Miguel Cunha, DPM, a podiatrist and founder of Gotham Footcare, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. That’s why he recommends looking for boots that offer good shock absorption, arch support and cushioning to help keep your feet comfortable as you splash around outside. He also says to make sure the toe box of your boots is wide enough to give your toes a little wiggle room.

Another priority when shopping is to find a pair of boots that “are as waterproof or water-resistant as possible,” Melissa Lockwood, DPM, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, Ill., tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Having rain boots that let in moisture can increase your risk of blisters or developing a fungal or bacterial infection, she says.

As a rule, you’ll want to avoid galoshes, i.e., boots you wear over your shoes, Lockwood says. These don’t have good support and can put you at risk of developing plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the thick band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes, she says. However, boots with a heel are OK and even recommended. “Rain boots that have somewhat of a slight heel (less than 3/4 inch in relation to the front) are actually better for you than shoes that are completely flat because it takes the stress off the Achilles,” Cunha says. “That can help with the alignment of your posture, ankles, knees and spine.”

Ahead, shop some of the best — and most comfortable — rain boots this spring.
