The Best Comedy Movies to Stream Right Now

Comedy movies are on something of a downward trend, box office-wise. In the Top 10 all-time highest-grossing comedies, the most recent is 2013's The Hangover Part III — in 10th.

That's bad news for the Paul Feigs out there, but good news for mid-budget versions of the genre looking to make a more immediate, nontraditional impact. Streaming is the unofficial home for bawdy rom-coms to thrive. And if you're still looking for jokes in your movies, just be prepared for them to be stuffed into a CGI red spandex suit with a Ryan Reynolds voiceover. Here are the best new and old comedies available online right now.

Superbad, now (disgustingly) 12 years old, still has a big heart and a lot to say about friendship, romance, and the unrealistic expectations other (not naming any names) hook-up brotherhood movies set for us. To think we're now in a world where Jonah Hill is a two-time Oscar nominee, and Emma Stone is one of the most bankable actors in the world, and that this is still one of their better projects.

A lot of people out there would argue Wet Hot is the funniest movie ever made, period. They've got a good case. The absolutely insane cast (not least including A Star Is Born auteur Bradley Cooper in gym shorts), the Simpsons-level commitment to for-the-sake-of-it slapstick, the bit in the goat shed. I'll never get tired of this movie

The Edge of Seventeen

Hailee Steinfeld makes angst look easy in what could arguably be seen as a precursor to the prestige coming-of-age boom enjoyed by the likes of Mid90s, Booksmart, and Lady Bird. Woody Harrelson, who more often than not sleepwalks through movies, followed around by a hazy cloud of vape smoke, does right by his younger co-star and the material here. Underrated!

John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid

<cite class="credit">IMDB</cite>
IMDB

John Mulaney is the best traditional stand up comic working today. That's just a known fact and I will brook no argument. His third special, The Comeback Kid is for my money his best, easily weaving between his favorite subjects of Catholic guilt, his headstrong wife, and his love of nonsensical '80s movies. Every five minutes feels effortless and like a magic trick.

Plus One

While we're all banging on about superhero movies getting more Oscar recognition, can we go ahead and all agree PEN15's Maya Erskine should also get a massive push for another overlooked genre in Plus One? She's brilliant as Alice, longtime friends with Ben (Jack Quaid), the two of whom make a pact to tackle "wedding season" together. Don't go looking for this one to reinvent the wheel, just bask in the good jokes and transcendent charisma of Erskine as she leaps from emotional extreme to emotional extreme in one of the best performances, and funny movies, of the year.

The Beach Bum

The plot of The Beach Bum is mostly insignificant. It's just nice to spend time in its world. I would watch a 10-hour cut of this movie in a heartbeat. Matthew McConaughey and Harmony Korine, both masters of their crafts, build their best work out of some of their least-urgent storytelling in this optimistic and full-hearted ode to burnouts around the world.

Mortdecai

A black-as-night comedy pairing two of the best up-and-coming actors, Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy is all at once a dark fable about adolescence, a horrid little story about class privilege, and a hilarious buddy movie. The needle drops in this movie are bananas, and also totally earned.

MacGruber

If any movie in the last decade deserved to break into that Top 10 highest-grossing list, it should have been MacGruber: ostensibly a spinoff movie of a mediocre running SNL sketch that was immediately grabbed two-handed by Jorma Taccone (The Lonely Island) and turned into one of the most ballsy, disgusting, offensive genre parodies since Airplane!.
