Last day to save: Best Buy's massive weekend sale is epic — these are the best deals, starting with $120 AirPods

Three-day weekend, woo! Oh, sorry, I don't mean you get to take Friday off; I mean Best Buy is having a three-day sale, one that's happening now and running through Sunday.

On the menu: Some fairly substantial savings on things like laptops, TVs, headphones and video games. (Yep, this is a Best Buy sale, all right.) For example, this weekend you can pick up Apple AirPods for as little as $120, which rivals one of the lowest prices ever for the super-popular earbuds. For the Android crowd, the also-popular Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus earbuds are down to $100, a $50 savings.

I've sifted through all the sale items and rounded up my top picks, below. My selections are based on not only my personal experiences, but also the size of the discount and the value for the price. Take a look, starting with what might strike you as an odd choice:

Apple AirPods Max

Don't buy these headphones. Seriously, don't. They're insanely expensive and, to my thinking, no better than the likes of Bose 700 or Sony WH-1000XM4, either of which will cost you considerably less. (In fact, the latter is on sale for $278 right now, a $72 savings.) Oh, and the less said about the goofy purse-like case these headphones come in, the better.

Couldn't talk you out of it? I understand. Sometimes the ears want what they want. But if you're going to buy the AirPods Max, at least take advantage of this deal, the best I've seen. At $469, they're a solid $80 off.

And, make no mistake, they're mighty fine noise-canceling headphones. They're lightweight and sound great. Plus, you get six months of the Apple Music streaming service for free, a $60 value.

So, yeah, you have my permission to buy them if you must. We can still be friends.

Sony X85J Series 65-inch UHD Smart Google TV

This is far from the least expensive 65-inch TV you can buy — but it's also the lowest price to date on a model that has great features and glowing reviews. And, after all, these are your eyeballs we're talking about; don't they deserve a premium picture for your weekend Marvel binges?

Right now the Sony X85J 65-inch UHD TV is on sale for $1,100; it normally goes for $500 more. Sony packed this model with all manner of advanced technology, all of it designed to deliver razor-sharp images and glorious color.

You can talk to this TV, too (and not just when your football team fumbles): It has Google Assistant onboard, meaning it responds to many of the same voice commands as other Google smart devices. You can not only tell it to change channels, but also ask it to dim the lights, tell you the weather and so on.

Although I haven't laid my peepers on the X85J, some 74 Best Buy shoppers collectively rated it 4.7 stars — and it earned a spot on Yahoo's list of the 10 best 4K TVs.

Pro tip: Even the best TVs need audio help, which is why I always recommend adding a sound bar. A good bet right now is this LG 2.1-channel 300-watt sound bar with subwoofer, on sale for $180 (save $100). Seriously, don't short-change your viewing experience by settling for anemic built-in speakers.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Tablet 2-pack

Here's an interesting bit of deal trivia: Amazon's current-generation Fire HD 10 Kids tablets have been on sale exactly once since they debuted in April. That's unusual; most Amazon devices go on sale frequently.

If you don't want to wait around for the next one (which could be months away), Best Buy's got you covered: You can get two Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids tablets for $300, a combined savings of $100.

Available in three happy colors and encased in a legit kid-proof case (seriously, Amazon backs each tablet with a 2-year warranty that covers everything, including accidents), the Fire HD 10 Kids is designed for ages 3-7.

To that end, Amazon provides a full roster of parental controls (over things like apps, usage time, the cameras, etc.). You also get a one-year subscription to Kids+, which affords unlimited access to a big library of books, games, songs, videos and the like.

Why not an iPad? Because the cheapest model starts at $329, and Apple definitely does not warranty it against getting drop-kicked, stepped on or juice-drenched. No parental controls (not like this, anyway) or kid-friendly content, either.

I have mad love for Amazon's Fire tablets. This is your chance to get a solid deal on a pair of them.

The best of the rest
