There is a fine line between beached waves, and frizz. This is something that I know this all too well. I have spent most of my life perfecting my hair routine to conquer dreaded frizz. The familiar feeling of leaving the house with perfectly coiffed curls or the sleekest straight hair and within seconds looking like I’ve been dragged through a bush in the most humid place in the tropics is far from ideal. Can you relate?

I’ve realised there isn’t one person who hasn’t suffered the effects of frizz and it can occur for a number of reasons. Firstly, the elements. As we know Mother Nature isn’t always the kindest to our tired tresses, from pollution and sun, to an almighty downpour, the environment really does wreak havoc with our hair. The way in which we dry our hair can also lead to frizz, especially with curlier hair types. The key is using an ionic hairdryer or a microfiber towel because of their fast drying properties and the fact they are slightly gentler on your fragile locks.

But the most overlooked cause is definitely dehydrated hair. A lack of moisture in your hair can lead it to become limp and dry, causing frizz. This obviously means that over washing your hair may well just be your fatal flaw.

According to hairstylist and founder of ARKIVE Adam Reed, “There are two types of frizzy hair. There is naturally frizzy hair where the hair has a tendency not to align itself with the other strands, causing a frizzy and unkempt look that can be hard to control. Then there's frizz that is caused by dry hair that’s lacking moisture. Cuticle layers should ideally lie flat, but in this instance the hair cuticles are rough and aren’t aligning which allows moisture to penetrate the hair. Moisture is then absorbed from the air which can contribute to a ‘halo’ of frizz.

“Frizzy hair can be difficult to control, but you should start with moisturising the hair to smooth and seal the cuticles. Moisturising products align the hair and cuticle and work to smooth the surface of the hair, giving the appearance of more a more controlled style. Ensuring your hair has enough moisture means that you are preventing your hair from re-frizzing. Dry hair is much more prone to frizz so using products that coat the hair and lock in moisture is key - silicone is a great ingredient for this.”

The best way to avoid and banish frizz for good is to weave hydrating masks and serums into your hair routine - and after years of trying and testing, here are my top picks.
