IF THERE'S one piece of home gym equipment you should have in your place, it should be dumbbells. “There’s a reason dumbbells are in every single big-box gym,” says MH fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S., who created an arm-focused muscle-building program, All Out Arms, based heavily around dumbbells. “If you want targeted muscle—and that’s what all guys want—then you want dumbbells.”

What if you don't have an official home gym or workout area? The great thing about dumbbells is that they require little to no space, especially if you invest in an adjustable set of dumbbells that can shift from light to heavy with a quick turn of a knob or shift of a setting. Then, your workout can take off even with one single pair of dumbbells.

Adjustable dumbbells are also great at simplifying things by tackling the two main common challenges posed by working out at home: space and equipment, since most people aren't utilizing an entire rack of dumbbells in their home for workouts (let alone space to accommodate). With adjustable dumbbells, you can have a range of weights in one set of dumbbells, eliminating the need for multiple sets of weights, and even minimizing the amount of equipment you need. Think about it; just one adjustable dumbbell can replace up to 15 weights.

Better yet, a pair of adjustable dumbbells will allow you to take your training to the next level without stepping foot in a gym. Now that's what we call efficiency.

Below, we've tested and rounded up 9 of the very best adjustable dumbbells on the market right now. Whichever set you choose, they're sure to help you stay fit, strong, and space-savvy while training at home.

If you’re building the mother of all home gyms and money is no object, this comprehensive premium set of dumbbells from SMRTFT is your man. The Nuobell 80-pound dumbbell set is crafted from near-bulletproof machined steel that’s built to outlast you. The adjustable design means that you can use the same set of weights for every muscle group for a complete full-body workout. Drop down to a little weight for bent-over flies, for example, or pile on the plates for more intense squats. It all adjusts seamlessly and easily with the built-in selector. Knurled handles make for safer lifting at any weight.

Although there are thousands of fitness apps available, we also like the free app included with SMRTFTs dumbbells. It offers access to on-demand workouts with pro trainers, plus the ability to plan your own fitness journey, find nutrition tips and get daily motivation.

The most innovative dumbbells on the market, the iSelects rely on voice controls to change resistance. That means you can finish a set of bodyweight sit-ups and yell to Alexa to switch to 25-pound dumbbells, then instantly grab your bells to start a set of curls.

They offer a weight range of 10 to 55 pounds per dumbbell, making them suitable for a variety of exercises and fitness levels. The weight can be easily adjusted in 2.5-pound increments, so they’re great for beginners or those looking to build strength conservatively. With a voice-control weight adjustment mechanism, they’re quick and easy to use and minimize interruption between sets.

Another feature we love is the thoughtful design. The dumbbells are shaped to fit the contours of your hand, with a textured grip that ensures a secure and comfortable hold through even your sweatiest lifts. The dumbbells also feature a durable construction with a metal weight plate and a sturdy plastic casing, ensuring that they can withstand regular use and the occasional drop (although you really shouldn’t be dropping these tech-heavy guys).

These dumbbells take up minimal space in your home gym or workout area and come with a convenient storage tray that keeps them organized and easily accessible.

The iSelect Adjustable Dumbbells are also compatible with the NordicTrack Select-A-Weight stand (sold separately). The stand allows you to keep your dumbbells organized and at the perfect height for your workout, making it easier to switch between exercises and maintain proper form throughout your workout.

An ultra-sturdy set of dumbbells built for durability, making them perfect for heavy-duty moves like dead stop rows, Romanian deadlifts, and heavy presses.

The Pro 50 Adjustable Dumbbells range in weight from 5 to 50 pounds per bell, which is adjustable in increments of 2.5 pounds. So they’re a good choice for those looking to develop their strength further, especially in accessory movements. The weight adjustment mechanism is also easy to use, with a simple pin system that allows you to adjust the weight swiftly.

With a length of just 12 inches, these dumbbells take up minimal space in your home gym or workout area, making them an ideal choice for those with limited space. A storage stand is included, too.

They feature a comfortable and ergonomic grip that ensures a secure hold during your workout. The weight plates are outfitted with a patented selector pin, which eliminates the need for any cumbersome knobs or dials.

But, as you may be able to tell by looking at them, they don’t offer the same weight distribution as a traditional bell. If you’re looking to use a set of adjustable movements for plenty of accessory movements, go with something more dumbbell-shaped.

Overall, they’re a really durable piece of equipment. Both the weight plates and handle are made from heavy-duty and welded steel, which ensures a long-lasting construction.

These Bowflex adjustable dumbbells have weights that adjust from 10 to 90 pounds in 5-pound increments, which replaces up to 17 pairs of dumbbells (that’s a lot of saved time and money potential). Their weight range also makes them one of the heavier options on the market, suitable for a wide range of accessory movements and heavier exercises.

They're also super easy to adjust; they have easy-to-use selection dials for adjusting weights that are smooth and user-friendly. The dial system is one of the most user-friendly mechanisms we’ve enjoyed, with no weights or pin to finick with. But keep in mind, these require docking each time you adjust.

These bells are also designed with durable molding around the metal plates to protect them from damage and reduce noise during use. The grip handles are also contoured to allow for a natural and solid grip.

With a purchase of the SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells, you’ll get a SelectTech App that provides a range of workout programs and guided exercises to help you get the most out of your investment. The app also allows you to track your progress and customize your workouts based on your goals.

Yes4All’s take on the adjustable dumbbell delivers up to 55 pounds of resistance and anti-rust plates that are built to last.

This dumbbell features a textured chrome handle that provides a grip that feels good during even your most intense sessions. The weight plates are made of cast iron and come in 5-pound increments, ranging from 5 to 52.5 pounds.

To adjust the weight, simply slide the selector pin to the desired weight setting—no complicated docking or technology needed. If you’re into an old-school adjustable dumbbell, this is your guy.

In addition to its uncomplicated adjustment mechanism, this bell has a durable construction that’s not going to break on you after some use. The weight plates are coated with a rust-resistant finish to protect them from damage, while the handle is designed to be sturdy and reliable.

They’re sold separately, so be aware of that.

You don’t just get an adjustable dumbbell with up to 45 pounds of resistance; buy a pair of Bellitrons, and you can combine them to form a mini-barbell with up to 90 pounds of resistance, too. Even better, the Bellitrons multi-position grips allow you to easily do dumbbell swings and other explosive exercises, too. The brand calls them “the transformer of free weights.” Talk about effective, space-saving home gym equipment.

These are constructed with a sturdy aluminum frame, so you can trust construction won’t degrade. Despite their heavy-duty durability, the frame is designed to be lightweight and easy to transport. They feature two handles on either bell that are designed to be comfortable and easy to grip. Each handle is also interchangeable, allowing users to switch between different types of handles depending on the exercise.

These adjustable dumbbells are sold separately. You’ll need to purchase two to access 90 pounds of weight and the convertible barbell.

One thing to note: Like the PowerBlocks, the shape of these dumbbells lends itself better to heavier exercises due to their non-traditional weight distribution.

Weight can be easily adjusted in 5-pound increments using a unique dial system, just with the turn of a knob. These bells are constructed with high-quality materials, including a durable metal handle that’s textured to prevent slippage. These dumbbells from PowerBlock are welded from solid steel and have a powder-coated finish. This one set replaces 16 pairs of dumbbells for a total of 825 pounds of weight, and each dumbbell is expandable to 70 or 90 pounds per hand.

Weight can be adjusted in 2.5-pound increments, which allows users to easily customize the weight for each exercise. The selector pin system on the Elite EXP Adjustable Dumbbell is designed to allow for quick weight changes, while the pin is color-coded to indicate the weight of the dumbbell.

The dumbbell is made with high-quality materials, including a steel handle and weight plates. The brand believes these bells are made to last, too, with a 5-year warranty to prove it.

As with the other PowerBlocks on this list, be aware that these don’t have the same weight distribution as a typical dumbbell. Meaning they work great for heavier exercise, but won’t feel right for accessory movements.

Should You Get Standard or Adjustable Dumbbells?

This comes down to three things: Space, personal preference, and how you plan to use your dumbbells.

If you have unlimited space, you can definitely consider standard dumbbells. But if you're in tight confines, opt for a good adjustable option. You'll also want to consider how frequently you'll be dropping your dumbbells. Even the best, most durable adjustable dumbbells on this list still have weight-switching mechanisms and shouldn't be dropped from a few feet in the air after a set of shoulder presses.

How Do Adjustable Dumbbells Work?

The basic design of adjustable dumbbells involves a handle that you hold onto during your workout, with a set of weight plates on either end—just like traditional dumbbells. Old-school adjustable dumbbells come with a set of plates of varying weights that can be added or removed from the handle, but newer designs have employed innovative adjustment mechanisms to make adjustable dumbbells more user-friendly.

Dial System: This mechanism uses a dial on the end of the dumbbell handle to adjust the weight. To change the weight, you turn the dial to the desired weight, and the mechanism will lock in the appropriate weight plates. Some adjustable dumbbells must be docked in their storage base to change weight with the use of a dial, while others can be adjusted outside of their docking station.

Pin-and-Lock System: This mechanism uses a pin to select the desired weight, and can take some practice to acclimate to if you're new to it. To change the weight, you pull out the pin, select the desired weight, and then re-insert the pin into the corresponding slot to lock in the weight.

Twist-Lock System: This mechanism uses a twist-locking mechanism to secure the weight plates. To change the weight, you twist the handle to unlock the weight plates, remove or add weight plates, and then twist the handle back to lock in the new weight.

Magnetic System: This mechanism uses magnets to secure the weight plates. To change the weight, you use a tool to detach the weight plates from the handle, remove or add weight plates as desired, and then reattach the weight plates to the handle using the magnets.

Are Adjustable Dumbbells Safe?

Adjustable dumbbells are a safe and effective piece of equipment when used correctly and with proper form (as with regular dumbbells). However, as with any type of weightlifting equipment, there are some safety considerations to keep in mind.

It's important to choose adjustable dumbbells that are well-made and constructed from durable materials. If you're using an old-school model which features removable plates, you should also make sure that they're securely attached to the handle before you start your lift.

As with any free weights, be sure to start with a weight that you can safely lift with proper form. If you're a beginner, it's a good idea to work with a personal trainer or fitness professional who can guide you in proper lifting techniques and weight selection.

The shape, feel, and weight distribution of adjustable dumbbells can take some getting used to, depending on the model you're working with. Because they may feel different compared to standard dumbbells in movements you do regularly, it's important to focus on slow, controlled movements and proper form throughout your workout (especially as you acclimate to them).

What Are the Benefits of Using Adjustable Dumbbells?

Adjustable dumbbells offer several benefits compared to regular dumbbells, with the most obvious being their space-saving design: No matter which adjustable dumbbells you choose, they'll take up less space than the sets of traditional dumbbells they replace.

Depending on the adjustment mechanism and ease of use, they also offer a ton of convenience. With regular dumbbells, you need to manually change weights for each exercise (or for old-school adjustable dumbbells, add/remove plates), which can be time-consuming. Adjustable dumbbells facilitate efficiency in your workout by allowing for quick and easy weight adjustments between exercises.

Another attractive benefit of adjustable dumbbells is that they're more cost-effective compared to multiple sets of their traditional predecessors. A lot of the options on this list aren't exactly budget buys, we know. But building out a weight rack with 5-15 sets of high-quality traditional dumbbells is guaranteed to add up in cost even quicker.

How to Choose the Best Adjustable Dumbbells (for You)

With all the options on the market, choosing a pair of adjustable dumbbells can be a bit overwhelming. This isn't a cheap piece of equipment, either, so consider these factors while you shop:

Weight range: Look for a weight range that meets your fitness goals. Most adjustable dumbbells can be adjusted in small increments, so it's important to consider the minimum and maximum weight of each set.

Size and shape: Adjustable dumbbells come in different shapes and sizes. Consider the size and shape of the dumbbells and make sure they feel comfortable in your hands. Basically, does the dumbbell feel “good” or natural to you? Again, this comes down to personal preference and might involve some trial and error.

Adjustability: Some adjustable dumbbells have a dial or pin system that allows you to change the weight quickly and easily. Others may require more time and effort to adjust the weight. Consider which type of adjustment system works best for you.

Weight distribution: Some adjustable dumbbells don't distribute the load only on the outside of the handle, changing how the dumbbell responds to certain movements (particularly accessory movements). A good rule of thumb is if you're looking to perform heavier exercises (farmer's carries, RDLs, rows) you can consider an adjustable dumbbell that doesn't distribute its weight like a traditional dumbbell, such as the PowerBlocks or Stroops Bellitrons. If you're planning to do more accessory movements (like biceps curls or skull crushers), opt for something more dumbbell-like, such as the SMRTFT or Yes4All picks on this list.

Price: Price is important for just about every home gym builder. For many people, this might be the deciding factor. We recommend adjustable dumbbells for most fitness types, and they’re typically the most affordable, so we suggest starting there. If, on the other hand, you have the space and extra money to burn, a dedicated set of rubber or iron hex dumbbells might be the better way to go.

Brand and customer reviews: Look for reputable brands with positive customer reviews to ensure you're purchasing a quality product.

How We Selected

Men's Health Fitness editors and writers have been testing the top adjustable dumbbell sets for years. Experts, including our fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. and fitness editor Brett Williams, NASM, have put countless adjustable dumbbell sets through the wringer to evaluate their weight capacity, performance, and durability. We also considered price point, as some adjustable dumbbell sets provide a better overall value than others.
