If there was ever a time to go big or go home, it was the 2019 Met Gala, where the “camp” theme inspired all-star attendees like Lady Gaga — who wore no fewer than four outfits in her procession along the red carpet — to push the proverbial envelope.
And nobody could accuse Benedict Cumberbatch of not trying. The Avengers: Endgame actor looked dapper in a white Tom Wolfe-meets-”Smooth Criminal” Labassa Woolfe suit, complete with matching fedora, embellished velvet loafers, a tasseled cane and — to the delight of Marvel fans — a tie pin inspired by the Time Stone. Wife Sophie Hunter proved a fitting companion in her voluminous lilac gown.
In a sea of black tuxes, Cumberbatch’s bold look was a real standout. And while the all-white ensemble earned rave reviews, it couldn’t dodge comparisons to everyone from Colonel Sanders to Fantasy Island’s Mr. Roarke. Here’s what Twitter had to say...

Granted, he looks like he's about to force Black people to start wrestling each other to the death DJANGO UNCHAINED-style, but he looks sharp. #MetGala #MetGala2019 pic.twitter.com/lkRyfhHcAR
