Matt Damon gives Michael Jordan a hell of a speech in AIR. If you haven't seen the Ben Affleck-directed film, Damon plays Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro. At one point, he tells the basketball legend, "Money can buy you almost anything, but it can’t buy you immortality. That you have to earn." Sure, that was just for a shoe deal—but not everyone understood the assignment. Over the weekend, Donald Trump borrowed the nearly two-minute-long monologue for a campaign ad (or a fan edit?!) posted to Truth Social... and you can't really do that.

This past weekend, a spokesperson for Artists Equity and the AIR crew sent a statement to Vulture, condemning use of the film as promotion material for Donald Trump's presidential campaign. "We had no foreknowledge of, did not consent to and do not endorse or approve any footage or audio from AIR being repurposed by the Trump campaign as a political advertisement or for any other use," the statement read. "Specifically in terms of any and all rights available to us under US copyright and intellectual property law, we hereby, expressly give notice that in the case of any use of material from AIR by the Trump campaign where approval or consent is required, we do not grant such consent."

As of Monday, June 12, the video still remains on Trump's Truth Social page. He has a history of doing this sort of thing, with artists such as Aerosmith, Adele, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Neil Young, Pharrell Williams, Queen, The Rolling Stones, R.E.M., and many more opposing use of their music at his rallies. The post currently has over 11,700 ReTruths—which the platform apparently calls retweets over there. Just leave the nice sneaker movie alone, man.
