Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas first emerged as a couple back in March 2020, and they’ve been the subjects of much fascination in the tabloids and online ever since. Now, after nearly one year, the pair have reportedly called it quits.

But how, exactly, did we get here? Affleck’s romantic life has been well-documented for decades now—from Gwyneth Paltrow to the J.Lo/Bennifer days and his marriage to and subsequent divorce from Jennifer Garner. Ana de Armas is newer on the American scene, with her breakout role in Knives Out and an upcoming turn as a Bond girl in No Time to Die—whenever we’re all finally able to see that movie.

Fall 2019

Affleck and de Armas film a movie, Deep Water, on location in New Orleans. The film is set to (hopefully) come out in November 2020 and is a psychological thriller about a married couple who has fallen out of love. It’s from director Adrian Lyne, who’s helmed projects like Unfaithful and Fatal Attraction, so we’re expecting it to be sexy.

It’s unclear when the two met specifically, but it’s not a stretch to think it was connected to this mutual project.

March 2020

Neither actor has commented publicly about when their relationship turned romantic, but on March 6, the Daily Mail published photos of them on a trip together in Cuba, where de Armas is originally from.

“Ben and Ana were seen leaving Clandestina [T-shirt] shop on Friday between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.,” a source told Us Weekly. “It was just the two of them and their driver. Ben happily took photos with fans. Ben was in a very happy mood, making funny faces in selfies with fans.”

On March 13, the outlet reported, “Ben and Ana are happy together and officially dating.” A source added that Garner was fine with the whole situation: “Jen has completely moved on from Ben in a romantic sense. She considers him a friend, thinks he is a good dad to their children, and respects him. She is happy in her own life and supportive of him and happy for him and his relationship.”

Soon the new couple was spotted out walking near Affleck’s Los Angeles home.

April 2020

The Affleck–de Armas walks, complete with PDA, become a quarantine staple in the tabloids. “Ana and Ben love spending time with each other by themselves right now. They don’t see much of Jen [Garner] when they’re together at this point,” a source told Us Weekly at the time.

The couple celebrated her 32nd birthday together on April 30, and she shared a photo of them together on Instagram (the third photo in the gallery below). Affleck’s voice can also be heard in a video of her hitting a piñata.

May 2020

Fan account @ArmasUpdates noticed the couple both wearing half of a heart necklace, like the ones you used to have with your BFF in middle school.

Later in the month, the couple appears (kissing!) in a music video for Residente.

June 2020

Paparazzi capture Affleck’s kids joking around in his yard with a large cutout of de Armas. They were all spotted flying out on vacation to visit Affleck’s mom. “They are spending a few days in Georgia with Ben’s kids. It’s a low-key vacation,” a source told People. “Ana seems to love being around his kids. Everyone has been getting along great. Ana is making an effort to get to know his kids.”

According to sources who spoke with People, the “It couple of quarantine” has called it quits. “Ben is no longer dating Ana. She broke it off,” one source said in the article published on January 18. “Their relationship was complicated. Ana doesn’t want to be Los Angeles based and Ben obviously has to since his kids live in Los Angeles.”

However, another source somewhat disputes the claims that de Armas is responsible for the split. “This is something that was mutual and something that is completely amicable,” they told People. “They are in different points in their lives; there is deep love and respect there. Ben continues to want to work on himself. He has three jobs lined up and he’s a solid father at home. They are both happy with where they are in their lives.”
