One of the country's most prominent pizza chains may have come from humble beginnings, but the beloved brand is on track for major expansion this year with nearly 90 new franchising partners.
Marco's Pizza was founded by Italian ex-pat Pasquale Giammarco in Oregon, Ohio in 1978. In 2015, after nearly 40 years in business, the brand had reached a truly impressive milestone: it officially became the tenth-largest pizza chain in America in terms of gross sales.
In the five years since, Marco's Pizza has continued its steady growth, having expanded into dozens of states and to several international locations, including India. It entered that market under the guidance of DJ Patel, a franchise owner who oversaw 40 units in the United States prior to the far-reaching expansion, according to Marco's website.
In the United States, Marco's Pizza is on pace for some of its greatest expansions to date. According to a press release, the company came off a strong revenue year in 2020 and has already secured nearly 90 new franchise agreements in 2021 alone. Overall, the chain has more than 200 new locations in development at present.
Marco's Pizza is looking to expand most aggressively in several Texas markets, including Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas, as well as in Denver, Colo., Orlando, Fla., and across Southern California. According to data sourced from the company itself, setup costs for a new Marco's Pizza restaurant can run anywhere between $223,535 and $586,410 for new franchisees.
