Can a cardigan be sexy? Seems so. The modest secretary sweater has gotten a sassy makeover courtesy of Bella Hadid. The model stepped out yesterday in Paris wearing a pared-back off-duty look that included heeled combat boots, mom jeans, a leopard-print belt, and a mustard hued cardigan. Hadid added an alluring styling effect that transformed the cardigan from a cubicle-prone staple to smoldering go-to: She went sans bra and fastened the sweater by only one button at the collar to reveal her midriff, as well as a flash of her bold belt.
Hadid isn’t the first to sport the look, of course. It was a saucy signature of the late ’90s, appearing in the cult classic Jawbreaker (1999) as the candy-colored garb of Rose McGowan’s evil high school vixen character, and as the barely-there cover-up for Cameron Diaz’s clueless-hot Mary in There’s Something About Mary (1998). Hadid, as her wardrobe indicates, loves that time period in fashion—so the cardigan just might become a new signature style for her.
