Go Behind the Scenes of Station Eleven with Danielle Deadwyler

Filming a series about the way a pandemic affects the world during an actual pandemic was as strange an experience as one might expect. “I didn’t know a whole lot about Station Eleven the book prior to auditioning, and I got the sides for the audition were so peculiar; I was like, what is happening here,” says Danielle Deadwyler, who plays Miranda Carroll, an artist whose prophetic graphic novel gives the series its name. “Upon getting the part, I dove into the book and discovered this wondrous, weird world—and then we started shooting at the top of January 2020, not knowing what was to come.”

Still, for being a series that could hit too close to home, Station Eleven—which flashes between the past and a future when a traveling Shakespeare company roams a ravaged America—managed to offer an unexpected bit of relief to viewers and its cast alike. “The show embraces the peculiarity of the human experience and the unknown,” Deadwyler says, “and how it can endear us to parts of ourselves and others in a beautiful, challenging way.”
