Even though Fall has officially started, it doesn’t seem like we’ve escaped what seems like an entire summer of salmonella recalls. Per the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the meat producer JBS Tolleson Inc. has announced the recall over 6,000,0000 pounds (about thirteen thousand cows worth) of “various raw, non-intact beef products” (ground beef) due to salmonella contamination.
So far there have been 57 cases of salmonella spread out across 16 different states. Each case is thought to be associated with the JBS Tolleson contamination. The cases were reported between August 5th and September 6th. Still, it wasn’t until September that the Food Safety and Inspection Service was made aware of another possible salmonella outbreak. The contaminated beef was sold under the following brand names: Walmart, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Showcase, Showcase/Walmart and JBS Generic.
Salmonella isn’t known for being a super deadly virus. Regardless, it still makes tens of thousands of people sick every year. According to the Centers For Disease and Control, salmonella still kills around 450 people on an annual basis. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning like vomiting and diarrhea usually arise within 12 to 72 hours of exposure. No deaths have been reported due to this particular outbreak, but vigilance is really the only way to assure that it doesn’t affect you or your family.

If you’re not sure whether the ground beef in your house or local supermarket is contaminated, each recalled product has the USDA inspection mark EST 267. The FSIS is still concerned that many people have the contaminated beef frozen in their freezers and is encouraging consumers to check their USDA inspection mark and throw out or return any questionable meat products they come across.
