These Bedazzled Box Braids Are Giving Me L-I-F-E
In case you haven't seen my latest Insta post, I recently got knotless box braids. It's been a minute since I've had my hair braided and I almost forgot why I love it so much—you're able to experiment with so many different looks, all without manipulating your natural hair. Honestly, thank you to the hair gods for protective styles. And even though I'm super into the half-up, half-down look right now, I'm always on the look out for ways to play around with my box braids.
And as luck would have it, Stasha Harris, Cosmo's braid queen, and Kim Reid, Maryland-based hairstylist, have a cute new style option for us. On this week's Braid Up, they're giving us adorned box braids. Trust me when I say this bejeweled look will definitely take your box braids to another level.
If you're into the idea of recreating this style (and, um, why wouldn't you?!), keep these tips in mind:
1. Spritz on an oil to add shine to your style. A lightweight oil spray is a major key to keeping your braids hydrated. Hit your look with a quick spritz whenever it's looking a little dull and could use a shine boost.
2. Opt for human braiding hair. You're probably thinking, "But Ama, braids are already so expensive, why not just use synthetic hair?" And, hey, if you're on a tight budget, definitely go the synthetic route. But human braiding hair looks more realistic and will make your braids look better for a longer period of time. If you can afford it, it's def worth it, IMO.
3. Go in on your baby hairs with an edge styler. This tool can truly do it all (sorry, rat-tail combs). There's a comb side to smooth out your edges, a side with boar bristles to whip them into shape, and a pointed tip to finish off your look. P.S. Don't forget to use a non-crunchy edge control. There's nothing that'll derail your look faster than white flakes from your gel.
4. Accessorize your braids. Finally—the fun part. In the video, Kim adds chains and glues on the studs, but feel free to play around with your style options. You can add gold cuffs, wooden beads—literally whatever your heart desires.
